Good morning DWT ladies.

How are we all doing? I am still doing better with eating and it is pouring with rain here in England today and it is very cold, so I am sitting in front of a roaring fire with a glass of water like a good girl
16.gif
The most exercise I will be getting today is turning the pages of a magazine, but I have been very busy with jobs around the place the past few days so I am not too worried about it. I bought some new Levis yesterday and am now in between sizes which is good - more progress!

Hi everyone,
That''s great Lorelei about buying new jeans. It''s fun to go shopping when you notice a difference.
I don''t have much to report. Yesterday, we went to see Wicked so had no time to work out. Not that I was utterly disappointed but it means I have to work out today, tomorrow and Sat. to meet my goal. I''m trying to stay positive about that somehow.
19.gif
Off topic, Wicked was very good! I was pleasantly surprised.
One thing that disappointed me is that I was at his house last night and he has this great scale so I use it when there. My weight has gone up. I don''t really understand that.
38.gif
But my body fat percentage has gone down. So i''m happy about that. I know someone mentioned the weight going up a bit when drinking more water so i''m going to accredit to that but it was hard to handle this morning. I had actually met a personal weight goal and now I am over that weight again.
I am trying to stay positive and not look at today''s weight as a permanent fixture, but it''s hard not to. The process of losing takes so long and it makes me upset w/myself sometimes that i''m in this position. That I let it get here and that I still have such a hard time staying motivated..eating right and exercising constantly.
Oh brother...
But I am moving fwd. Not going to let this change my week or the goals that i''ve accomplished.

I hope everyone''s having a good morning thus far.

Great job ladies!

I dragged myself out of bed and did 45 minutes of cardio. My bf is putting a little too much pressure on this weeks weigh-in which makes me nervous. I know he''s just trying to be supportive, but I ate badly the last two weeks and didn''t exercise that much. Plus, this is my ''bloat week'' so it''s extra hard for me to lose. So nervous!

I need to go close shopping too. But I want to lose some more to make sure that I go a size down. I''ve gotten into the ''wear what fits even if it''s too big'' phase. I''m afraid to try on my mid-skinny pants yet. Maybe after next week.

Amy -- where did you see Wicked? I''ve seen it twice, once with the original cast. I love it!

I''ve been having some problems with the workouts for the past couple of weeks. I like to do 4 per week, but last week I only did 3 and this week I''ll probably do 3 at the most. I was doing so well, but now I just feel exhausted after every workout. I didn''t think I was working out too hard, but I don''t know. Also, my stomach has been acting up this week, so I''ve only done 1 workout so far. Hopefully I will feel well enough to work out tonight and tomorrow to at least get a 3 workout week in.

This exhaustion is starting to worry me. I was experiencing that during late summer, so I took about 3 weeks off. I then went back to working out periodically until after the holiday season. I''ve been working out steady since the New Year, and the exhaustion is kicking in again. It seems like once everything starts going well, this happens. Has this happened to anyone else? I try to eat well and take vitamins, so I don''t know what else to do.

Are you sure that you''re eating enough? Sometimes that really contributes to being tired. Also, maybe you should go to the doctor. Get your blood tested for everything. Two years ago I had a routine check up and it turned out my blood calcium was too high and I had to have a gland removed. I would have never known otherwise...

I think you may have overtaxed yourself Coda, you have been doing such a lot of strenuous workouts recently that maybe it would be an idea to take a week or two off to recharge and rest up. I know that sometimes I get so tired ( as you know I have a lot of physical work to do ) that I know it is time to stop, I get swollen glands and feel wretched. Then I cut back as much as I can, just do the essential jobs and try to rest more. You might be a bit run down and suffering from muscle fatigue. See if a few days off helps, if not see the doctor regarding your stomach, but I bet that is the problem - you have overdone it. Hope you feel better soon, then when you do, ease back into your routine and maybe modify it a bit. Sometimes our bodies send out signals to tell us to cool it so to speak. Also you start work so early in the morning which doesn't help. Have a rest then see the doctor if this doesn't make a difference.

Lorelei, I miss England, rainy or otherwise. My boyfriend''s family lives in the Midlands and I''ve spent about a month and a half there total in the last three years. I really love it there, Brum accents and all ;)

On the exercise front - today was strength training. I''m up to bench pressing 25lbs a side, although I can only manage about 4 reps. There used to be a time, some years ago, when 95lbs was fairly comfortable.

I cannot say enough about the squat though - today was my second time squatting with the bar, and it is loads of fun. It''s also hard work, and I''m actually out of breath after each set, but it feels like it''s doing something.

Tomorrow, it''s another 4.5-5mile run. Today, I am dreading it, of course, but tomorrow after it''s done, it''ll feel great!

:)

Amy and Amanda: you''re not alone. Today seems to be a heavy day for me as well... Whenever the scale fluctuates too much from day to day, I remind myself that it is impossible to gain a pound in a day. I would have to consume 3500 extra calories!!! That''s four small pizzas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Having eliminated the possibility that the extra pound I see is fat, I think the most likely scenario is water... :)

Is your BF a Brummie Stermag? I should think his family is putting up with the same horrible cold drizzle that I am at the moment. He is in very good company, that is where Sharon and Ozzie are from!

Yep, fat days hit us all at times, as you say SM it can't be actual FAT so it must be water or just feeling bluuurgh in general.

Coda,

I had a similar experience about a month ago. One day I came home so exhausted and hungry simultaneously, I felt this tremendous void in my stomach but I honestly didn''t know if I had the strength to eat anything, much less prepare it. I managed to toast two pieces of whole wheat bread with a tiny bit of butter... and ate it as if my life depended on it.

I think I might have been going through some sort of carb withdrawal. My diet used to consist of at least 50% carb, maybe even 60%. When I cut that down to about 30-35%, I was doing okay for a few weeks, and then all of a sudden... WHAM... I was flat on the floor. But it passed within a few days. Right now, I have cut carb down to 25% on all but two days of the week, and I feel marvelous. I think the body just needed to readjust.

Have you recently made any changes to your diet? Maybe you need to tweak it a bit, or just give it time to become accustomed to it perhaps?

Amy, if you are working out consistently and building muscle, that''s probably why you''re seeing an increase in weight and a decrease in body fat. That''s a good thing! Don''t get discourage by the numbers on the scale...you''re doing the right thing by exercising and eating right. Sometimes it takes a little time for the body to stabalize itself and for you to see a change in your size. One of my good friends has been working out consistently for 8 weeks and she''s using an e-diets plan, and she still hasn''t seen any "weight loss." I suspect she''s going through the same thing you are. It might be time for you to switch to a different form of cardio for a couple of weeks, one that burns more calories and builds less muscle.

My exercise routine has been about as consistent as our weather (bitterly cold over the weekend, and now it''s almost 40 degrees outside, lol!) . Monday my gym is starting training for a group of us to do the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Chicago, so I''m signing up for that! The walk is in June, so I will have a reason to stay motivated for at least three months with the 2-day, 39 mile walk as my goal!

It might be time for you to switch to a different form of cardio for a couple of weeks, one that burns more calories and builds less muscle.

Monarch, in general, muscle is not built through cardio. In fact, quite the opposite is true. When we exercise very intensively, and burn a lot of calories, a large percentage of that is lean tissue, because the body is very reluctant to give up its fat stores. Muscle is built through resistance training, by repeated tearing and re-building of the tissue, and it is especially important for people who begin an intensive cardio program to also incorporate some strength training for this very reason.

Having said that, what compelled me to comment is that under no circumstances should one ever be encouraged to build less muscle. A mere drop in weight is not, in and of itself, a good thing if that weight lost was LBM (lean body mass), as it increases your overall body fat percentage, and that is a bad thing. Not only that but having more muscle makes you a more efficient calorie burning machine.

So, good advice on the whole but I needed to jump in and clarify. Hope you don''t mind. :)

good day!

i had my dragging day yesterday. for the life of me, i didn''t want to go to the gym -- especially since i had forgotten my ipod at home and my work gym places the WORST music. but, i went and it''s funny -- i''m the kind of person that just needs to get my foot in the door, because once i''m there, i''m there and i work out. i didn''t feel fabulous after the cardio, but i was just proud i did it. hopefully today it''ll be a bit less of a chore...

omg i wrote this huge post and lost it WAH!!!!

jist was i agreed with sterm...building muscle is good, burns calories faster than when you have fat etc. important to incorporate resistance training into your regime, you can even use your body as resistance rather than weights.

coda i mentioned i thought you should also ensure you are eating enough, esp before or right after a workout (however you feel better...some people dont like to eat before), i eat a kashi bar with lots of fiber and protein and it burns off faster but gives me an energy boost. also, i'd really listen to your body, i know as i get older each year my body makes sure to let me know in some way...i can't work out as hard as i used to without feeling really tired consistently. so maybe give it a break a bit. oh and i said 3 days is fabulous for working out per week, don't be too hard on yourself!
2.gif

oh and i worked out last nite, yay, and my arm was uncomfortable most of the night, but hopefully will be better by monday...for next class. hoping to walk today, the weather is great!

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I guess I should realize that as I get older, I just can''t push my body as hard as I used to do. That''s pretty discouraging since just two years ago I ran a ten mile race like it was nothing. I was 31 at the time and thought I could keep up this pace for years to come. But last September it hit me that I just can''t seem to run miles and miles like I could. I''m going to keep trying though, never giving up, maybe just take it a little easier.
As far as the eating goes, I know I''m eating enough, in fact many days I''m eating too much still! But maybe I''m not eating the right kinds of foods, who knows?
I hope everyone has a great workout today, and those of you that already worked out for the day, I envy you!

Girlfriend, at 33 (if my math is correct) the world is your oyster! I''m not having any of this "at my age" stuff... :) I personally know a woman who started running in her early 50s and ran her first marathon last year at the age of 53.

At your age, it might be too late for Olympic figure skating or gymnastics (since those girls are barely past their teens) but other than that... dream big! What''s the worst that can happen?

I don''t feel old, per se, but my body seems to be letting me down. I am trying to get in shape to do this 10 mile run again in May, and I just can''t seem to get my mileage up. At 3 miles, I am dead tired. Two years ago, 3 miles was nothing. Nothing has changed except I''m getting older. I still weigh the same, feel the same physically, haven''t changed my diet, or anything. But I just get tired a lot easier. I don''t know what it is!
By the way I had bloodwork done in September and nothing showed up that was abnormal.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I''m going w/the theory that it''s water weight too. Given it''s that time of the month, I won''t weigh myself for a few more days. I''m trying to only weigh myself once/wk, but sometimes I give in. I''m usually disappointed when I do though. I feel like the body fat percentage going down and weight remaining could be building muscle but I haven''t been doing much weight training. I really only do cardio, abs and some leg exercises. I also cheat and do push ups on the wall. Does anyone else hate normal push ups as much as I do??? Some of my workout tapes incorporate weights but i''ve been a slacker at the gym and just do cardio. So who knows. I''m just trying to stay consistent and not worry so much.
Coda, I think that there are so many things that account for exhaustion. It could be your body adjusting to your workouts, it could be from work or any other stresses in your life. Mental exhaustion easily leads to physical exhaustion (although for some reason it took my bf a long conversation to get this). I feel exhausted constantly! My blood work comes back good though and i''m eating/exercising pretty good so I attribute it to stress. I know that my job is mentally difficult so it wears on me. I also tend to take things internally which can be difficult and harder to manage. So I wouldn''t worry too much. I think what others said, maybe decrease the workouts a bit or going to the dr. can''t hurt to make sure all is ok. Maybe a different vitamin would be better? I am very bad at remembering to take vitamins. One thing that has helped me in the past w/being tired is doing wheatgrass shots or even using the powder Spirulina mixed in a drink. It gives energy but can be hard on the stomach.

Can we start a list of healthy snacks please!! I need to add to my very short list. I like to snack on things like:
cut up red peppers
apples w/peanut butter (although I know you can eat so little peanut butter/serving..yuck!),
pineapple and peaches in a can
yogurt
slice of low fat cheese or string cheese

Anyone else?

Oh, I forgot to answer that I went to see Wicked in Chicago. It was so crowded but fun!

I envy everyone who has already exercised today too.
36.gif
I am leaving work early so I can make it to the gym today. Day 3 for me.

right now my fave healthy snacks are kashi bars (they are crunchy with lots of nuts and whole grains) and also navel oranges! i have been eating oranges like they are going out of style.

oh coda i also wanted to say, make sure you are getting enough SLEEP...that''s so important esp when you are working out your body hard.

Coda,

Physical shape (i.e. what you look like) and even weight have little bearing on your cardiovascular endurance, that is your level of aerobic fitness, or the maximal rate at which oxygen can be utilized during exercise (Vo2 max).

If you haven''t been running consistently for an extended period of time, and even if you''ve taken a month or two-month long break, you will notice a drop in your endurance.

This is, I''m almost certain, the reason why running 3 miles has suddenly become more difficult than it used to be and not your age. Trust me, stick with it and you will be running 10 miles in no time... well, maybe not in "no time" but definitely in "good time" :)

M

...and speaking of healthy snacks:

1. clementines, yum yum...
2. Grandy Oats organic chocolate granola - probably my fave right now
3. whole wheat cheddar rice-cakes (sometimes, I use these instead of bread to make open sandwiches - I especially like them with light cream cheese and thin slices of smoked salmon)
4. Special K (the low-carb version) - it''s actually surprisingly delicious to munch on when you need a bite of something
5. fat-free cottage cheese ...either with fruit, a scoop of whey protein or tuna

that''s all I can think of for now. I''ll edit if anything comes to mind. :)

Coda, you live in the Philly area? Just a thought, but I know the weather has been bad in the East coast recently and I wonder if it could be partly down to the time of year and not enough daylight that you are feeling tired and lacking a little energy. I know here I find this time of year more difficult, so that might not be helping the situation, I''m thinking along the lines of SAD, begin again when you feel a bit better and have rested then build up gradually, but I bet you have been doing too much and you just need a rest.

Amy94: sorry I wasn''t very clear about the muscle vs. fat thing (and thank you stermag and mara for clarifying). I don''t really know what your workout routine consists of re. strength training/cardio, so I was speaking in general terms. The others are correct, though, in saying it''s not a good thing to discourage building muscle. I guess I was thinking if you were already doing a lot of strength training and were "bulking up" but not losing as much weight as you''d like that I would suggest doing something different in your workout routine to kick-start the old metabolism (instead of walking/running, try spinning or kickboxing, etc.) Sometimes it helps me to switch activities when I have a couple of stubborn pounds that won''t come off, even though I''m doing my strength training and usual cardio. Sorry if there was any confusion

.

Are you in Chicago proper, or the burbs? I''m out in the west suburbs...at least it''s warmer this week, that always gets me more motivated to work out!

snacks:

+1Tbs natural peanut butter and banana/apple (smuckers natural peanut butter is literally the best thing ever and no added sugar!!! it is so delicious and it''s a substantial snack)
+peppers and humus
+string cheese
+almonds

and i love annie''s natural salad dressing for quick spinach salads! the lowfat ginger something or other is tasty

Monarch, I lived in the city most of my life but recently moved to the West burbs also (we''re neighbors!) for better schooling for my son. I still work in the city though. This is my 3rd yr in the area, and I like it for the most part.

Oh, that''s cool! I live in Brookfield, and I go to a gym in Lagrange. Pebbles is in the west burbs too, we keep saying we should have a PS/Chicago get-together.

Monarch, I''m in Oak Park. We go to the cheapy LaGrange movie theater every time there''s something good. I ususally work out at home or at Bally''s. Today I had these big plans to leave work early, go pick up my son and go workout. Turns out, he wasn''t even at school today!! He stayed w/my parents yesterday b/c he was sick and they decided (w/o telling me until 3pm) that he wasn''t there. Glad I didn''t take off early. How annoying! So i''m just going to work out at home today and save the take off early and go to the gym for tomorrow.
At least that guarantees me another 2 days of working out.

Thanks everyone for the snacks! Great ideas. Now I have to stop being so lazy and go to the grocery store.
