I got this ring at an online auction. It’s in the category I call “fun rings”. Big, dressy, bordering costume jewellery. And cheap. It’s 18ct gold (yay!) and rose cut diamonds, sporting a huge dark green stone in the center. I actually didn’t even expect the diamonds to be diamonds to be honest and the green thing to be glass or synthetic something at best. I shone my UV light to check if the “diamonds” or some of them fluorescent. Some do, I checked then, they are indeed diamonds. (yay again!) As for the center… it’s green and when on the finger it’s almost black. But then under blue light it turns red. What is it? Probably not glass (or maybe it is?) I think synthetic something? But something what? Or might it be tourmaline or spinel? Would either turn red under blue light? I couldn’t find anything. Do you have an idea? Cubic zirconia? Synthetic/simulated emerald? What was it advertised as? This has all the markings of a modern antique-style ring, so any of the new synthetics/simulations would be on the table, including glass: https://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology/winter-2016-gemnews-color-change-glass-zultanite-imitation.

Oh, ist wasn‘t advertised as anything- just green stone. Diamonds are indeed diamonds, gold is 18ct. I bought it for fun, it wasn’t expensive at all. So I wouldn’t mind it being glass, but indeed wonder what it actually is.

A pawn shop might be able to help. They can ID glass, and if it comes up as spinel or emerald, it's synthetic.

Thanks - we don’t have pawn shops where I live (Europe based). I could show it to a jeweller but it might not be worth it. We’ll see.

The abrasions make me think it's glass, or topaz

To be honest, I do too. But why on earth would someone put a piece of glass in an 18ct gold setting and put diamonds around it? And if so, why not put a nicer (less dark) piece of glass in it? Weird things happening in ring world :-)!

Yeah, odd choice if it is! Maybe it's a dark sapphire. Sapphire will abrade with enough time and wear

I don’t think so. It’s an odd ring and a bit big, but it looks kind of cool, sort of costume jewellery. I wonder where it came from.

If I didn't know better, I would have guessed Alexandrite. :mrgreen2:

Noooo - :-) it just turns red under blacklight, no such fancy things as Alexandrites can do.

Long shot suggestion- Moldavite?
