Last night, J sent me an e-mail asking me when he should take his week off during the summer. What really sucks is that I have no idea what my summer is going to be like. I''ve been sending resumes for summer jobs/internships since February, but so far have gotten only one response saying "thank you for your interest, we''ll keep your resume for a period of 12 months". Bleh. Last summer I was very lucky and got two well-paid 35 hours/week contratcs in my field of study, one for five weeks and one for eight, but I might not be this lucky this year... And for all I know I could end up flipping burgers all summer on a hectic schedule...

So at lunch time I was looking at stones while winding down before class, and I sent him an e-mail saying I have no idea when it''s best for him to take his week off because I have no idea what summer has in store for me. I also showed him a stone I liked that is cheaper than the other one I''ve been looking at and would fit his budget much better.

Here''s a translated exerpt of the conversation we just had...

J: Won''t you be taking some time off before or after working?

Me: Before I''ll probably be still job-hunting like mad, and after... it''ll depend if I have a contract with specific date, or if I''ve worked enough weeks in my summer... I dunno. Sorry.

J: No problem, I just didn''t know if you had anything planned. And I''m wondering what I''ll do with my summer this year.

Me: No, I don''t have plans... I don''t even know if I''ll be able to go to Navo Scotia with my grandmother. We might have to go on Study Break next Fall, if I have one. (My grandmother wants to take me on a one-week trip to Nova Scotia next summer, by train. I''m really excited to go and spend some quality time with my grandma, but I have no idea what''ll happen!)

J: Ack, that sucks. I had something else in mind, but it''s fine.

Me: Huh? (I was truly, genuinely clueless)

J: Well, I can''t talk, but you don''t know when I''m going to ask you for your hand yet, don''t you? (I think it''s so cute how he says he''s going to "ask me for my hand" (me demander ma main) instead of saying he''s going to propose (me demander en mariage)... He''s really the sweetest thing)

Me: OH.
23.gif
I see. Eeek, I hate not knowing what to tell you...

J: It''s ok. I''ll find something.

Me: I''m sure there''ll be a weekend something we''ll be able to take...

J: Yeah, we''ll see.

YAY!!! He''s going to propose THIS SUMMER!!! I am so excited... WOOHOO!!
36.gif
I have no idea where the ring/budget stands right now, but at the moment I''m feeling very zen about it. We might go shopping when I get back home, we might not. *shrugs* The frenzy might come back once I''m done with school, we''ll see! But right now I''m just really excited to know he''ll propose withing the next five months! FIVE MONTHS! SQUEE!!

Meanwhile, if anyone has any tips about summer job hunting, they would be very muchly appreciated...

Awww, everything sounds so much cuter in French

Sorry about the summer job troubles. I worked during the school year and my biggest problem in the summer was trying to get them to move me from part time to full time when I was out of class. And theres also the unpleasant dilemmas of the good job that pays crap and the bad job that pays well. Pfft.

Theres still time to find something and still have time to make summer plans. I hope everything works out, and you have a nice sparkly to help you enjoy your summer!

Awww, yay! And I agree that te demander ton main sounds so cute.

I''ve had such varying luck and experiences getting summer jobs. I was very sick after my freshman year (mono/pneumonia/hospital stay), and spent the whole summer recovering. I had a job lined up for the summer after sophomore year with someone on campus, who forgot to look into funding. That wasn''t going to work. I ended up finding a volunteer position with my friend''s mom''s division that at least got me good experience. In trying to find something, I stumbled upon another job that had an October application deadline (very early). It was too late to apply, but I did apply the fall of my junior year and got that for last summer. A lot of people I know have used connections or have hung out in career services (which is something I never really tried). If your parents have friends in interesting fields, I''d ask them if they have ideas. They could even end up offering you a job. Sorry about the rambling, and I hope this helps.

NOVA SCOTIA?!
I live in New-Brunswick!!! :)
where are you from ?(or where do you live rather?)

I guess I kind of assume everyone is from the UK or the States

Yay, Anchor31! I hope everything works out as it sounds like it will.

Thanks for the tips everyone!! I'll keep looking and keep asking!

I'm sooo excited about the proposal being this summer... lol I'm going to start referring to the holiday plans as the proposal plans soon!

It always makes me happy when people say good thing about my language. As a French-Canadian, I'm very attached to it!

And the way he says it, so excited and shy... It's the sweetest thing.

Hey there Sparkly Stars!!
35.gif
I'm actually very close to you right now, as I'm studying in Rimouski!! Home is about an hour north from Montréal, and I'm going back at the end of April. My grandmother is in Ottawa (my mother's family is there) and she has a niece in Nova Scotia, so she invited me along to go visit with her for a week. I really, really, really hope I can go!

okay.. so in reality i meant to say YAY THIS SUMMER! (but wow! ur so close! thats super neat :) hehe)

also- diamonds over there are hardly what you see here..right?
(I ask because here.. 1 carat is considered HUGE.. and often that goes with asking "is it real"
20.gif
) so I wonder if its similar over in Quebec?

YAY ANCHOR!!!

How exciting! I''m so happy to hear that your original timeline estimate was right! So I will be waiting to hear about that "asking for your hand" story!

Hehe, sparkly stars, it''s alright, I knew that...
28.gif

And yes, it''s the same here... I think my wealthy godmother has a 1 carat, but it hardly is an ideal cut. Aside from that, what I''ve seen are 15ct-ish stones buried is fancy gold settings. The girls around my age who are engaged either have .25 ctw semi-eternity bands or "promise rings" sort of rings from mall stores. So... Never mind 1 carat, if I get an ideal cut .50ct like I''m hoping to get, I will probably get asked pretty often if it''s real!!

Cinderella - I seem to have a flair for those things...

Who is it here that said that women can smell diamonds?

Anchor,
Your summer sounds like fun, a great trip and proposal! Maybe you can find a summer job/internship through your university. I also know that where I am, there are many festivals and usually people are needed to work in the summer. Or you can just send out resumes/cover letters to companies that interest you. Even though they may not need anyone for the summer, it''s always good to get your name out there and begin the networking process.

Good luck (with everything!).

YAYYYYYYYYYY anchor, that''s SOOO SOOON!!!!!!

I CAN''T WAIT for this trip to happen! Of course I''ll know he''ll propose then when we''ll go, but he seems to be trying to plan a surprise... I have no idea where he intends to take me, and that is new! He''s usually not very good at surprises, but he''s trying!
30.gif

Yes kali, job hunting is very stressful, and I''ve got enough on my plate with this term already, so it''s not easy, but I''ll find something. Even if it''s just flippin'' burgers...

Anchor your news sounds awesome! I hope he asks you in the early part of the summer!

What sort of job are you looking for?

I''m a biology student, so I''m looking for something related. Last summer I worked 5 weeks in a research lab taking care of the animals and 8 weeks for my town''s administration in the environment department handling various cases such as natural territory protection and pesticides regulation, and doing research on wet lands and such for future projects and regulations. I loved both jobs, especially the second one as I hope to work in environment protection as a career. I was very lucky to get those contracts and I''m hoping they might get some funding from the government to hire me again, but nothing''s certain.

In other news, both the diamonds I told J about are SOLD!!
39.gif
My dear boyfriend sent me a sweet email at lunch time saying his spends quite a lot of time daydreaming about how he''s going to give me my ring (his words exactly), so of course my over-excited hyperactive imagination caused me to get my hopes up that he''s bought it already and that he bought one of them, but I honestly don''t think he did. Unless he''s being extraordinarily sneaky, but he usually isn''t. I was bummed for a bit, but I looked some more and sent him the link to another one. I''m not sure he''ll be willing to go with WF, but I can still try and hope!
