Deciding between Mikimoto Earrings

I’ve been thinking of getting a pair of earrings from Mikimoto, but can’t decide between the Mikimoto 18kt Akoya Pearl and Diamond Heart Studs or classic 7mm AAA Akoya studs




I like the Diamond Heart design because it reminds me of the Les Petales Place Vendome earrings (but I’m not prepared to spend that much on a pair of pearl studs) which has that graceful petal-resting look but the pearls would only be at A+ quality and 5mm so I’m a little worried that it’ll be a bit underwhelming in size.



On the other hand, the 7mm AAA pearl studs would be the perfect classic pair of forever studs for me as I like to keep my collection small but high quality.

What do you guys think? Should I go for design, or the classic studs?

I prefer the classic pearl studs, maybe because I don’t like the design of the heart and pearl studs. I think you’ll wear the classics much, much more!

Does it have to be Mikimoto? If not, then you could get a pair of the classic studs from a trusted vendor that are top quality and then perhaps get removable jackets designed which incorporate a small diamond motif of some kind (you might not be able to do one with a motif on top of the pearl unless your piercings are low or the motif is really small), but you could do something to the side or below? And if you don’t pay the Mikimoto premium you could probably get this in close to the same price as the classic MM studs.

Thank you for your thoughtful response! I’ve been looking at Mikimoto for a long time now so it’s a dream to own one of his pieces first. I’d probably branch out to some of the trusted pearl retailers in the future as I’ve read some great reviews about them here!

I’ve not thought of adding a earring jacket, so now I’m a little more swayed towards the idea of having a classic pair of studs and getting a removable earring jacket to bling it up now, thank you for the suggestion!

Think I’ll pick the AAA studs as it is the most versatile and was the one that started my love for pearls!

IKR, I’ve never been a heart-shape person until I saw that pair of earrings too!

After digging through some old photos of trying on the 7mm AA and 7.5mm AA at Mikimoto, I’ve decided to order the AAA 7.5mm studs instead! Even at AA grade they are so incredibly stunning already, will update the thread again once I receive the 7.5mm AAA pair in 3-4 months once it’s ready for collection!

I have the Mikis (though I don't remember exactly which size they are) and I love them. You can't go wrong with a classic pair of top notch pearl studs. I think you are right in going with the slightly larger 7.5 size and definitely go with the AAA.

Update: So I just received the AAA 7.5-8mm Akoyas and they are perfect! The lustre is truly mirror-like and mesmerising to look at. Thank you all for participating in this thread and helping me make a decision!

Update - went to the Tokyo Ginza Mikimoto store and couldn’t resist getting the necklace - this is the Mikimoto Premium (equivalent of AA) 6.5mm Akoya pearl necklace and the mirror-like lustre actually matched/beat that of the AAA Akoya pearl earrings, although there are more visible blemishes compared to the smoothness of the earrings.

Absolutely worth the buy!

What a find! All of the luster of the highest grade, save a boatload by compromising a little on surface texture or an extra few divots - which you won’t see anyway thanks to the luster!

Awww thank you!! definitely feeling lucky to have it! It’s 16” if I’m not not wrong - haven’t taken much photos of it yet but here are some we’ve taken so far!
