I purchased a beautiful spessartite garnet, dimensions 10.00*8.50*6.70mm , which I intend to set into a pendant for my mom. When I brought it to my jeweler, what I had in my mind was a solitaire pendant with a simple box underneath. However, the jeweler suggested that the gem is relatively deep (at 78%) and therefore doesn't allow that design. He also suggested that whatever setting that goes with the gem has to be three-dementional rather than flat to accommodate for the depth. A lot of these three-dimensional designs are either too "traditional" or too childish (turtle, dragonfly, etc.) I'd really appreciate it if you could give me some ideas on how to set a deep/thick stone. BTW I'm still waiting for a sunny day to take my own pictures of this Spess! The brilliance is exceptional.

I don't see why a regular basket will not work. The bench might have to lengthen the prongs a bit, unless he is concerned about weight balance (tipping or twisting).

Chrono thanks for your reply. I totally agree! I did my own research and found a bunch of large oval stones (typically Amethyst, Aquamarine or Rhodolite) being set in regular baskets.

I also contacted the gem vendor (Finewater Gems). Gary has some concerns about the gem flipping over, so he recommends having two mounting points for the chain.

Have you thought about setting it east/west style?

Here comes my own picture! The color and brilliance are impossible to capture with my phone...The base color is reddish orange while the flashes are golden orange...not a total fanta orange though.IMG_1096.JPG

What colour !

I am often too much of a fan of simple settings that need complicated work ...
