I am just wondering, do freshwater pearls exist in deep purple colors? Or are they all dyed? I purchased an inexpensive strand of bracelets and the colors are a really nice deep purple. The pearls are have quite a number of surface blemishes, and they are "fat" rice shapes (I really dunno what to call the shape) measuring 8-9mm.

The deep purple is not even or perfectly matched, and some are more greyish while some are almost copperish red. They have quite a nice luster, despite the imperfections.

What do you guys think?

anyone?

DEEP purple? First reactiong would be to think they''re dyed. FWs can be a dark lavender color, but purple?

It would be helpful to see a picture of what you''re calling "deep purple"..... we like pictures in here.

yeah i dunno. i haven''t seen enough to make an educated guess on whether or not the color would be natural. Pics please?

Purple does exist but you''ll find paler lavenders more often. How deep of a purple were you looking for?

Would love to own a natural color purple strand. But I''ve never seen one. Anxiously waiting to see your pics.

I would say DEEP purple exists (just look at the PP metallic purples) but a VIVID purple does not.

Sure, pearls can be dyed a deep purple but as there isn''t much a demand in the market for purple ones you won''t find many. If the demand grows or if a store/company wanted an exclusive style, they could be custom dyed.... it just wouldn''t be cost effective in small quantities.

I''d actually posted a reply but it disappered...

Anyway, I was saying that I dont have a camera, but will try to take pics with my iPhone. And well, I do like the colors of the pearls (they are more dark blue than red) except for 1 coppery one...

I just hope that the colors wont fade!

Another question is, why are the colors uneven if they are dyed? Is it done on purpose to create a more realistic look?

Think of of this: Take a 1000 people, slather them up with Coppertone #4 and drop them on the Beach. The tan color range will vary as everyones skin is different. A small number will have the same tan or close to each other, but the rest will truly vary. Pearls are the same. Each one reacts and accepts the dye a bit differently. The pearl harvester then has to sort them by shade and if only a handful are "perfect" in hue, tone, luster etc - that necklace will have a higher price tag.

Actually this does make sense! Thanks!

Anyway, here are the pictures.. but like I said, I only have iPhone pictures... and you know how crappy the camera is... The colours are actually much lighter, but just to give a picture to those who requested to see them.

In this pic, the pearls look sooo black! But trust me, they are not IRL. The more I look at them, the more I like them. Seriously, I don''t really mind that they are dyed (just curious, you know). They do show a fair bit of luster don''t they?

Definitely dyed- I have some very very similar ones. I would restring them with black but I''m picky that way, lol. They''re great bang for the buck, I get almost more compliments on my $10 dyed freshies than my really nice Tahitians. The color will not fade. I dunno why there is variation in color from pearl to pearl but there usually is. It''s just how they look.
