My refrigerator died last week so we got a new one delivered last week and a friend came in and hooked up the water yesterday. The fridge makes "Craft" ice as well as regular cubes. The instructions say the six balls a day will not be as clear as the three craft balls.

Here is one of the six balls per day craft ices, this is after throwing away the first batch as per instructions.

You might be able to cleave the I3 top off and perhaps get a low I2 off the bottom two thirds, but this is definitely NOT clear. I will report. back on the quality of the three cubes per day.

I am hoping at least for an SI2, but I may be lucky to get an I1.

I am totally not sure about putting an I3 into a good glass of scotch. I mean, what would my gemologist friends think of me if they new I was cutting corners with my good scotch?

I don't know how these fit into it but I just learned about whiskey stones and thought they were too cool to be left out. :)

I keep waiting for my three craft ice balls to drop. I know it is way to early for a good scotch, but if the balls are clear enough I may just splurge...

Gonna be interesting to see if eye-clean vs mind-clean will play a factor here. I mean, have you looked at them under the loupe to see what’s really going on? Could take awhile to plot that one tho and while diamonds are forever, this kind of “ice” isn’t. LOL!

If you cannot get IF balls, send the frig back.

when we brought our house we budgeted for a new all the bells and whistles fridge
but there were so many bells and whistles we couldn't deside and came out with a basic modelW2623292_30.jpg

The quintessential Tiffany setting of ice cube trays.

Way cool, but when I went to see the price, NO WAY! HOLY MOLY!

I will wait for my three clearer ice balls to fall tomorrow.

Good luck Wink! Hope they don’t disappoint!

Yeah but we are talking six ice cubes in only one day. You can't expect perfection with that kind of crazy-high throughput.

A lot (most?) of the cooling effect of ice is in the phase change (i.e., melting) so the non-melting stones and metal balls are not equivalent to ice. Someone here could probably present some convincing math but it's (way) too long ago for me.

:lol-2: is anyone else now thirsty ?

and along with the ice are we putting the e in whisky ?

Ice in whisky???!!! :eek2:

Only a drop of water for single malts for me! :cool2:

However, I usually drink blended whisky diluted with lemonade and ice as they will last longer than shots of whisky!

DK :lol-2:

Finally, they fell. One had internal twinning wisps when I put a little water on it to dissolve the surface frost...

Here is the next one, carefully removing the surface frost with only my fingers for this photo.

Once the I1 left side is removed there is a small layer of SI2 inclusions, then a large area of IF. I can only hope that the I1 layer is removed in future balls at three per day and I can have entire flawless balls to put into my whiskey and bourbon...

I will admit to not having the patience to wait that long and having one in a nice double shot of Oban which I am still drinking as I post.

Ahhh, happiness is...

well the heart wants what the heart wants but i wouldn't buy it

Okay, Last night's drop was a little better, and I think the drop today will be about as good as it gets.

Thin layer of I3 at the bottom, some surface blemishes and a lot of VVS to IF ice. Too bad these are not real diamonds that I can have cut to my favorite proportions with incredible optical precision to make them really light up a room.

If truth be told, it has been fun getting a new fridge, my old one was about 25 years old and we found treasures that were fifteen to more than twenty years old buried under the layers of pictures of the grand kids and their parents. Some of the most special were the hand drawn pictures from the grands to grandma.

I have never had water or ice dispensed from my fridge before, and it has been fun getting it plumbed and working.

Truth be told, the absolute WORST THING about getting a new fridge was the hour or so the front door was open with the screen door off so we could get the new fridge in and the old fridge out.

Why was that so bad you ask? BECAUSE OF THE EXPLETIVE DELETED FLIES!!!

Their were suddenly dozens of flies in the house and they were beyond annoying. As one of my friends says, I was speaking Fluent Trucker with a Marine Dialect about and too the flies.

It took a few days, but now they are all gone again. Thank you to all who enjoyed playing Ice Connoisseurs with me. ;)2

@Wink , surely this is your opportunity to start carving up the rough to create your own signature cut!

@Tonks, how right you are. A trim to get rid of the I3 layer at the bottom, all while providing a stable base, and then some genius faceting to assure optical symmetry to release both flashes of white and colored light for maximum visual enjoyment and voila, The Continental Diamond Ball of Glory(TM) from 15 cts. and up.
