My lovely Jeweler has hundreds if not thousands of waxes from which to choose from in terms of ring settings created by him and his father before him over the last five decades or so. He at first was going to pull a dozen or so of them that he thought I might like. Then he put the brakes on things and told me he was working on a "master work" lol, and wanted to hand carve something in wax for me and do an entirely new setting for my beautiful zircon. I was both surprised and very pleased. My only reservation was that he said I couldn't see the finished wax until he was done with it. I went by today and got to see it for the first time. I'm attaching pics below. He does not use CAD.

Please give me your honest and thoughtful insight about the setting. I tend to like more antique style settings and am not afraid of bling. My engagement ring is a large oval sapphire in a halo with diamonds down the shank as well. The zircon will be worn on my other hand and is a 40th birthday present from my hubby (eeek! Next week!)

Please tell me both what you like and what you dislike about the setting. What he has created has no additional stones other than the Zircon and the two 40 point old European cut diamonds on either side of it. All of the metal work is filigree and will be in white gold.

I have already asked him to make the frame around the stones follow the shape of the cushion a little bit more. Do you think it needs more than just filigree? Should I think about additional stones in the frame or on the shoulders? The filigree work is very delicate and I think would likely need to be scrapped if I were to add stones. The cushion will be held by two prongs with pointed tips at each corner. Here's the link to my previous thread that shows the zircon and the side stones as well.

Hi keeliamira

I really like the carved shank and shoulders I don't really like the filigree halo for the center stone primarily because it is round and the zircon is a cushion. Personally I would keep the shank and shoulders as is but have the top down view be more like this wax mold I am wearing in the picture below. It is designed for a cushion center and round sides. I like the idea of having a rather simple look from the top and the detail in the various profiles.

Just my 2 cents. I'm very excited for you

I personally love all the details. I think it's gorgeous! But I do agree with Sungura that I think the top down view would be best if it was shaped for a cushion rather than a round. But it's going to be amazing!

Are the diamonds tilted inward, and does the zircon obscure them a bit? Its a little hard to tell from the photos

Sungura, thanks, I'm super excited too! I agree with you that I don't like the round shape of the filigree from the top against this shape of the cushion. One request I've already made is for him to make the filigree around the top follow the line of the cushion. I'm really not sure if I'm going to like that though. I'm also not sure if I like the fact that the only three stones in the ring are the center stone and the two sides stones. What do you think about accent stones?

Thanks lovedogs, I totally agree with you.

Chroman, I'm really not sure. I'm going to go look at it again later today if I have time. I don't think the diamonds are tilted, but they may be tucked under the zircon a bit.

What do you think about adding tiny diamond or something? It doesn't have to be totally blinged out, but does it feel too plain with just the filigree?

The same here. Love the shoulders, not hot about the halo. The filligree also doesn't seem to fit or "flow" with the blingy sides.

Just to be clear... The detail in the shank and shoulders is filigree too... There are no stones.

What do you think about changing the top view to something like this shape - wise :

Gotcha. The cross-hatch filigree doesn't do the stones justice. I really love the patterned filigree on the shoulders though. He cannot use a similar pattern for the main stone?

Love the hexagonal type front! It takes my eyes and mind away from a face + ears look.

Chrono  too funny! I totally see a face now!
I think the pattern in the halo is pretty similar to what's on the shoulders... It just doesn't translate the same. I'll see what we can do to modify it. I totally agree that it needs to be changed.
Still trying to determine whether accent diamonds... Or anything else for that matter, would add to the design. Thoughts?

Chroman, to were right! The diamond are tilted in towards the zircon! I don't like how tilted they are... They do follow the line of the shoulders comming up towards the center stone, but I don't like how much they are tilted. I don't want the angle to impact the light return on the diamonds. We're going to lessen the angle of the diamond, maybe remove it all together, and change the halo around the zircon from a circle to a hexagon and tweak more from there.

Looking forward to the next iteration
