Hello,

I've been looking at loose diamonds for the past few weeks and trying to educate myself. It's been an uphill battle and I'm still not confident I have enough knowledge to make a purchase. It was recommended I post here for some advice. If anyone is willing to take a look and give me some honest input or advice I would truly appreciate it.

GIA Round 1.5 GSI1 (5176260948) $10,300
7.30 x 7.33 x 4.55
Cut: EX
Polish: VG
Symmetry: EX
Strong Blue

Table: 58%
Depth: 62.2%
Crown angle: 35.0
Pavilion angle: 41.2
Pavilion: 43.5%
Crown: 15%
Cutlet: none
Medium to slightly thick faceted 3.5%

AGA/NAJA
Tab% 1A
Crown angle: 1B
Crown height: 1A
Pavilion depth: 1B
Girdle: 1A
Depth: 1A
Polish: 1A
Symmetry: 1A
Total score: 1B

HCA score: 3.7
Light return: very good
Fire: good
Scintillation: good
Spread: very good

I was told the inclusion are not visible to the naked eye but I will not be able to view the diamond until I receive it. In your expert opinions is this a diamond I should consider pursuing taking into account the information provided.

Thanks you for your time,

Billy

Okay, so, my philosophy is that killer cut is greater than carat size. I'm not worried about the SI1; it will be fine. I wonder if the strong fluorescence affects the stone adversely--you need to ask that question. Does it make the stone hazy, milky, less transparent? slightly cloudy in any light? Greyish? Blue? Anything like that. Either way (whether it does or doesn't), you're getting a discount because the value is lower due to its fluorescence being strong.

I'm concerned about the cut. The HCA score is not exciting me. Here's the thing. If you are going to buy online, pick a diamond that knocks it out of the park on the HCA and you will know you have a killer stone.

I see a stone:

GIA
1.40 G SI1
7.12 x 7.15 x 4.44 mm
Depth 62.2
Table 57
Excellent Cut
Excellent Polish
Excellent Symmetry
No Fluorescence
HCA Cut Score: 1.7 (Ex/Ex/Ex/VG) --> The spread is VG, all light return elements are Excellent.
$10,700

Now, your stone has a size advantage over the one above. However, if we put them side-by-side and observed the light performance of each, I think mine has a much greater chance of outshining :).

In short, it has been my experience that going for CUT first, and everything else second, is by far the best method. There is a difference between people saying, "beautiful diamond", and, "that's the best diamond I've ever seen." The first diamond I ever bought was only .55 carat, but it was a super ideal, and I routinely heard people say it was the most beautiful diamond they've ever seen, period. Go for the cut.

That's great advice - I couldn't agree more. Get the best cut you can and never look back.
