Hello lovely Pricescopers,

Following up on a previous post where I didn't provide much useful information, the jeweller my fiance and I are working with has sent us some diamond analysis reports on one of the diamonds. They're asking us whether we want to go ahead with it but I'd feel better if we had some input from here first. It's such a big special purchase and we're nervous :loopy:

Here's all the info on the diamond they sent us:
So what do you think? Does it look like a goodie? Yay or Nay? Any input is appreciated.

Beautiful in MHO

I think the crown is very shallow. After having had a diamond with a low crown (and later sold it), I prefer a taller crown.

Is this the ASET for your stone?

I took a screenshot from the link you put in there. If this is your stone, it is going to be very leaky and rather dead looking.

ETA: here is an example ASET of an oval with excellent light return.

Not caring for it. Its got too much darkness going through the center and not enough "nice", well-defined facets
returning light.

I know that you want the biggest face up but a well cut stone will look bigger than a similarly sized non-ideal stone.

The Elyque didn’t exist when my sister got engaged. But if it did, I would have encouraged her to get one. I remember that you had difficulty reaching Rhino (can anyone help with that?) but look at a video of this stone for comparison.

And, whoa, look at the ASET image...

Thanks so much for all of your input.

I can see what is meant about there being far too much light leakage, that photo of the elyque oval really does put things into perspective. Thank you for taking the trouble to send me all the links.

Jonathan from distinctive gems/ actually did end up replying lulu_ma- it seems our initial query just got filtered out. It was after we'd contacted another jeweller so I felt a bit guilty not going through them but that's a bit silly.

I think I'm convinced and we'll reach out to him again. I can see that he actually already went to the trouble to give us both elyque and non-elyque options to view:

Non-Elyque

Elyque

To my untrained eye, they all do look sparklier than what we were considering!

The elyque you posted is a bit out of our price range unfortunately lulu_ma. What do you think of the one above?

TBH one thing that's been putting me off the elyque's are that their pavillion just looked a bit odd and chunky to me but that could just be because I'm not used to seeing ovals cut like them and I'm viewing them close up from a computer screen. I doubt you'd notice the pavillion much at all once they're mounted.

The Elyque ovals are by far the best cut ovals you are likely to find. You'll note that their depth might be greater and their face-up dimensions smaller than a traditional generic oval. So you might need to go a little larger in the Elyque to get the same size appearance that you were planning.

I'm far from an oval guru, but I wanted to expand on @diamondseeker2006's comments about the depth being "greater" and consequently the face up size (spread) being smaller.

Essentially for every style of cut there is a "sweet spot" where light enters the stone, perfectly bounces and returns. When the geometry of the stone is off you will get different angles that ultimately cause light to leak and the end result is a stone that is not as beautiful (firey).

So terms like "deeper" may actually mean proportionate as opposed to shallow. And other stones may be cut for weight ($ profit); therefore, they may legitimately be too deep. Normally over steep stones are small for their carat weight. Shallow stones are large for their weight. And proportionate stones are...you guessed it, proportionate for their weight.

Getting advanced images like the ASET's help confirm the stone's proportions are correct and providing maximum light performance. If it leaks, it will show up in the ASET.

*slowly exits the stage*

This article applies to rounds, but is good reading nonetheless:

The 2 ct G/ SI1 Elyque looks great. You just have to confirm that it's eye clean.

I know you want over 2 carats but it wouldn't hurt to have Jonathan take pics of the 2 ct next to the 1.87 ct F/ VS2. The F/ VS2 is actually the same width as the 2 carat but is fractionally shorter(8.86 mm vs. 9.09 mm length).

I put the diamonds in the Diamond Database for you to visually compare (ignore the wide band-I couldn't adjust it on my phone. The 1.87 ct is on the left, 2 ct on the right.

Just so you know, these stones have almost the same face up as my 2.85 emerald cut!

I’d like to see the two with a side by side comparison?

Your non-elyque link is not bringing up a stone. Can you try again so we can see what that stone looks like?
