HI:

I am, and have been, in the market for a diamond bangle for some time--and unable to find something at hand that suits. I realize that I likely will be searching across border (I am Canadian--and NO

I don''t work for Molsen''s brewery!!!) b/c of lack of items locally and especially of what I saw today: BUT please correct me if I am out of line for being upset at one prospect offered me today by my favorite local jeweller (set my golden Tahitian pearl--lovely++).

The specs on the bracelet presented--albeit different in design than what I wanted, but could be amended--was 7.45 CTW, princess cut stones 190 in total, VS1 G, invisibly set, white gold, for $30,000 Can$$. I had to take a breath--is it possible that stones of this size and set by this method would amount to such a large $$$?
Granted I am not totally inert, but admit to perhaps living in a diamond time warp: am I out of touch or is the vendor asking just a bit "too much" for such a bracelet?

Sheesh.

cheers

Sharon

Do you have a picture to post? Would love to see it.

lets see:
7.45ct/190 == .039 average per diamond.
.04 G vs2 runs $21 each at www.israel-diamonds.com
so. Only the rounds are listed but the princess is the same price.
I used them because they are real cheap and not far from US wholesale cost.
190x$21 ==
$3990US for the diamonds. ~ $5000 canadian.
So you would be paying $25000 for the setting and labor.
one word....
OUCH!

E vvs2 runs $27 so G vs1 would be close to the $21 mark.

eather way it isnt a deal.....

HI:

I too did the math while standing there and granted I had no "official" price/carat as you kindly pointed out STRM, I somehow knew $4,000 CAN/carat was TOO steep. Think I'll pass on that bracelet. Excellent European Master Goldsmith however....

P.S. Cflutist--I have no picture to offer at present; mabye I'll cruise the web later and see if I can come up with a likeness. It was pretty, just not my tea cup--and not for 30 grand.

cheers

Sharon

Hi, Sharon. My jeweler has a stunning bracelet much like the one you described but in yellow gold. It is magnificent and I believe it was almost 10 or 12 cts of small invisible-set princesses of vs, F-G quality...I can't remember the exact price BUT I do remember it was very high and I was a bit stunned (and off it came!)--I think invisibly set princesses done properly involves a LOT of work and special cutting so the stones fit and endure with wear.

I'll check it out again next time I swing by his store...

Yeah... invisible setting is supposed to be more expensive. And if there is some designer signature on the bracelet even more so.

However, these small diamonds cut for invisible setting are produced bulk by specialized cutting factories just like anything else (example). It is definitely not something done locally. The technique is old enough - no longer rocket science.

There are different types of this technique. Thought I'd mention - just in case you may be comparing different types.

Invisible setting done on a courved surface is difficult and unusual compared to the same technique used to create flat diamond layers. A rounde bangle covered in diamonds would be a serious collectible rarity due to craftmanship

One with a flat band of invisible set princesses set in a thick frame of gold (the common scenario) is just a nice and relatively labor intensive piece - not too rare (LINK).
