So I just bought my AGS 000 .83 H VS2 round. Beautiful idealscope. 1.0 HCA score. 1A aga score. Bought it from Diamond Ideals for 3700.00. Could not have been happier with the price quality or service. Then I had it sent to my girlfriends friend who is a jeweler and he was going to set it in a Tiffany style setting. But they chipped the diamond while setting. They are now trying to give me a .90 H VS2 GIA excellent, but this diamond only scores a 2.7 HCA. Am I over thinking the HCA and it's merits or not? Her jeweler friend says it's a Gia stone but there is nothing wrong with a AGS especially when it comes to the cut right? I loved the first stone. What should I do? Reject the stone they are offering and ask for another? Should I also ask to keep the "chipped stone" in addition to whatever they give me? Thx

GIA Excellent does not equal AGS 000. It doesn't get better in terms of cut than a top grade AGS stone.

GIA's Excellent cut specs are very broad (while still making the grade) and the proportions of the replacement stone are more than likely less than ideal when compared to your original stone- as confirmed by the >2 HCA

You want an apples for apples replacement and I would accept nothing less. It could still be GIA if that's what they can source, but the cut specs on that thing better match (or exceed) your original AGS 000.

Was the diamond insured?

Also, yeah. If they chipped and AGS0 then they need to give you an AGS0.

Wow. I am stunned they are replacing it. Did you but a special insurance from them? Many jewelers wouldn't replace the diamond if you didn't. Why would they undertake such a risk to sell a simple setting?

reject it they chipped it you want a comperable stone not a bigger one with less sparkle

Some jewelers do insure while setting. Their insurance will cover this. So frankly, I'd ask them for the exact same amount you paid, as evidenced by your receipt, or an AGS0. Those are the two options that they have...

If they or their insurer replaces pays for the stone, they own the chipped one. You have been made whole. That one can be repaired, regarded, and sold to someone else as a partial recovery of their costs here.
