I am sometimes offered stones which may be for example, classed as 'G+' or H+ or 'VS1+'

Can I ask what the + means? For example, if it is 'VS1+' then is that supposed to mean that it is a mininmum of VVS2? Or does it mean that the stone is most likely a VVS2 but a few people may still class it as a VS1?

I would infer that to mean it’s not lab-confirmed to be a certain color or clarity, and that whomever is saying “G+” thinks it is at least a G or better.

Depending on who it is making that assertion would determine whether I would believe them. I’d likely insist on a lab report in the absence of a reputable, independent appraisal.

I've seen something like this on a jeweler website's generic listing and I would interpret H+ or VS1+ as H or better and VS1 or better. I would assume the lowest category unless otherwise stated.

Also seen instances where the seller is trying to say it is the higher end of say VS1 when they say VS1+. There is a range if you look at individual VS1 stones where some are closer to VVS2 while others are closer to VS2.

Either way, I agree with the above that you need to see a reputable lab report (like AGS/GIA) to be sure.

It means the stones are ungraded by a reputable lab ...

Diamond clarity is graded on a scale from the highest-quality FL-IF to the lower-quality I1-I3. For most consumers, the middle spectrum VS to SI quality is the best choice. Although these diamonds do have small inclusions, they are not visible to the naked eye. Larger diamonds graded I1-I3 can still cost more than a smaller diamond with a better clarity grade and color. You can find an example in apartamentos en zahara de los atunes. The smaller, higher-quality diamond would likely only cost more if there was a slight difference in carat weight.

Some larger diamond manufacturers set a +- grade internally noting how good the Color or Clarity is of a diamond. The grading is done internally and is completely subjective. It’s a little bit of a conflict of interest as well since the seller is giving this grade to their product. When in doubt, reach out to your trusted vendor and ask them for their opinion on the stone.

Good luck!

Hi,
Welcome to PS!!!
AS a general rule....I don't like general rules:)

Seriously, there's really no "standard" in either the sort of clarity a consumer might want- or in the appearance of VS and SI diamonds...some of which certainly DO have eye visible imperfections.
