Hey gang!

So the diamond hunting, thanks to all of you, was SUPER successful and I couldn''t be happier. I''m having some real issues though when it comes to the side-sapphires to go with it. The main issue seems to be the cut of the sapphires... and all us PS wise people know that the most important 4Cs are cut, cut, cut and Cut!

I''m hoping you cutting experts out there can check out the thread I just posted in the colored gem section and give me your opinions from a gem cutting standpoint. I''ve leared a lot about diamonds here but I''m totally lost when it comes to the sapphires and really worried that I just got a bad deal...

ff you are an extreme case of an extremely fussy customer.

I think you are overlaying diamond standards onto colored gems and you will never be happy.

Buy glass or CZ or other colored synthetics please.
aw, garry - rough day at the office? You can''t trumpet consumer education and chastize some one for wanting it yanno... now where''s that cream stout pic you''ve put before....

Garry: Wow... I''m only this questionning because I''ve learned from you guys on PS!

This includes you! I didn''t buy an idealscope when I was shopping for the diamond (no I didn''t use it as a judge of the sapphire!!!!!!

) because I thought your tool looked pretty!! I bought it to learn and to use the knowledge and tools you provide to help in making an INFORMED dicision.

As I said in my posts, I have NO idea what standards to overlay onto Sapphires. That''s why I asked!!

If the experts here think the sapphires look good FOR sapphires, I''d be completely accepting of that. Isn''t this what this forum is for?!? If sapphire standards are different, I completely understand. Educate me please.

Hence, according to Sapphire standards, what do you think of them? What do you think would be a fair price for them?

For a very helpful Aussie, you definitely woke up on the wrong side of the world today!

Thanks Cehrabehra! I appreciate the

response. You''d think of all people that Garry (Cut Nut) would be understanding of my concern about the cut of one of the sapphires.

Good thing I''m very good humoured. :>

eh - everyone's allowed to be grumpy now and again... I don't know anything about sapphires but i can *guarantee* you that the #1 criteria should be visual. Basically - if you *like* it - buy it!! It's ot only the most efective it's also pretty low tech lol

ff if you are using the 2 stones either side of a center stone (reverse 3 stone) then any variances in cut can be used to advantage.

Sit the stones in your crevice between fingsres at the angle they will be at and relative to each other and spaced as they will be in the finished mount.

Then turn them until each has the same and the best look from the face up view point.

Now you can take advantage of color banding and cut variances to optimize the stones given they will be tilted anyway.

Use a felt tip pen that marks stones to place arrows as to how you want them orientated by the setter.

But do it with your naked eye. 10x has no value in such exercises

ff I think Garry was just trying to save you dissapointment later when you found out how gemstone cut differed from diamond criterion in the real world.

A diamontaire of his knowledge is allowed to be grumpy every once in a while, I guess

That being said, its all about the COLOR don''t stress so much on cut parameters and numbers, look with your naked eyes for even and intense/saturated color as you can find. The best is traditionally a velvety blue like those found in Kashmir, but good luck finding that.
