I'm in the market for a round rock! I am looking for a 1.2-1.7 carat diamond and am debating whether to get a H or G color, VS1-SI1 clarity, and H&A cut. I'm also most likely going to go with J&A or Whiteflash. For this size of a round cut diamond, can I get some recommendations for color and clarity? I've heard that the H&A from WhiteFlash are also better than J&A, does anyone else have knowledge on H&A between the two sites? Thanks to all :)

G/H VS2/SI1 sounds good.

As far as JA vs WF, WF 'specializes' in H&A but nothing wrong with JA, either way you would want to check out the hearts image.

Does one vendor have a setting you like better or policies that appeal more to you?

I already purchased the ring from a local jeweler because I wanted to see the ring in person, and the retailer had a ton of choices. It was at a good price compared to online stores too because I got it during a no sales tax/10% off deal they were running on all rings. And they didn't just mark up the price before the deal haha I have been looking at rings for a while and waited for them to have a deal.

Anyway, I like both JA & WF and I don't see too much difference between them besides inventory selection. I've heard WF is better if I wanted to get a H&A diamond, as their quality is best. But I also know that JA has been around longer and has insanely good reviews online. I originally wanted to get a VS1/G diamond, but after doing research it sounds like as long as the diamond is "eye clean" then there's not really a difference in VS1/G and SI1/H. Does this sound accurate. Thanks again!

H&A is case by case, although WF is quite strigent in that aspect. You always want to check the arrows and hearts image to make sure it is up to standard.

On color and clarity, depends on your eye-sight, color sensitivity and preference. Color, some may be able to tell the difference especially near the upper end of your carat range. Also, not all SI1 are eye-clean, depending on your eye-sight, best to ask if eye-clean from the vendor, stating your criteria.

You already purchased the setting? Is it a setting that has a peg head? Most settings that will hold a 1.2 cant hold a 1.7
(and vice-versa) unless they just have to exchange out the peg head. Just making sure.

VERY important point.

Go to your jeweller and have him tell you the exact tolerance in mm of the setting if it has an integrated head or very closed shoulders with little clearance for the peg head. You might be surprised by how small a diametre-range you actually have to play in.

G-H will not show much of a difference color wise, unless you are extremely color sensitive. They will be extremely close in visual appearance, but the H will allow you to get a little bigger in carat size. Also- if you can find an eye clean SI1, then you will save money and or be able to go up in carat since SI1 are less "valued" than VS2.

Definitely make sure that the head of your Ering can hold the size diamonds you are looking at.

Thanks for all the great responses. The ring I purchased had a 1 carat sample diamond in it when I looked at it. I also talked about buying a diamond through them and told them I was looking at a 1.2 carat diamond. At no point in time did they tell me it wouldn't fit that ring while they were trying to sell me the diamond. This is good knowledge to know and I wish I would have read it before I bought the ring....but I think (and hope) that the diamond will fit in the setting.

It is most certainly in your best interest to go back and have them check before you chance a 1.7ct stone.

I truly cannot think of a single integrated setting that could handle a 1.2-1.3mm increase in diametre and still A) look fluid and B) the basket/prongs remain structurally sound. In the diamond world a 1mm+ increase is huge. If your setting has a high and close-shouldered cathedral even fitting a peg head to accomodate that size increase may be an issue. Hope cannot change these facts.

I think there's confusion here...the ring I purchased originally had a 1 carat diamond in it when I looked at it. When I ordered the ring I ordered it to be made for a 1.2 carat diamond. I then ordered a 1.2 carat diamond after the ring was ordered. So I'm not sure I have anything to worry about.
