I am in search of a diamond engagement ring for my hopefully soon to be finacee.

I know she would like a rectangular shape diamond. I was between a Emerald or Radiant. I think with her she would appreciate the Radiant for it brillance more, but I am not a diamond expert and honestly do not know anything at all about diamonds until I started on this journey for a few weeks now.

I do not know what is reasonable...any help, thoughts, or advice would help me make the right decision.

I was offered a 1.51 ct GIA Radiant with the following specs:

  • Color H
    Clarity VS2
    depth 68.1%
    table 69.0%
    symmetry excellent
    polish excellent
    no fluorescence
    no cutlet
    7.33 x 5.90 x 4.02
    Length/width ratio = 1.24

Asking $10,500 USD

Hi YF and welcome!

Unfortunately, we can't get any meaningful information on this stone without images, radiants are subject to so many variations and cut qualities that the basic proportions don't tell us anything sadly. Can you get any images for this diamond such as ASET and detailed photographs please? If so, that would be very helpful or can you see this stone in person? Also, when you mention your GF wants a rectangular stone, are you sure that she wants a distinctly rectangular shape with distinct edges? I just wanted to mention just in case that maybe some cushion cuts might appeal to her, it might be worth asking. Please disregard the above if you have already discussed other shapes with her, I just wanted to mention it.

Where is the radiant above for sale, is it with an online vendor or jewellery store? Personally I won't vote on your poll as there is really not enough information to go on at the moment to be able to select an option, but I hope some of the above helps and then we can go from there.

Hi Lorei and thanks!

I am just excited overall to begin with and I definitely appreciate your response. Thank you for taking the time out, everything will go a long way in the end and would make a significant difference.

So I am one of those hopeless romantics and trying to keep it as much as a surprise. So over years of the relationship, once I realized she had the potential to be my future, I would sprinkle questions every once and a while and just keep note, also with everything else just pay attention and try to determine taste, style, etc. She never specifically said cushion/radiant/emerald, but great thought I did not realize the cushion could give me the rectangular shape as well. If I am correct I suppose it can be cut like the radiant except with rounder edges(?). I honestly do not know if my girlfriend is even familiar with the shapes differences. However I can figure if there is a way I can see which way would lean with still keeping it a surprise.

So with that said, unfortunately I do not have an ASET or detailed photograph, so it seems like I may have to be left on a limb on this one...I did see the stone in person this week compared to other radiants it gave off the best brillance in person, but i am not sure how useful that is. I did think it was nice looking stone. Out of my time of searching, I may be saw 2 other stones that seem to rival it (with a slight edge up), but out of my budget.

How exciting! Congrats on your ring shopping journey. If you stick to radiants, I would definitely recommend that you get images before you decide on a stone. Unlike rounds, you can't really eliminate/select them on the numbers and there are a lot of radiants with "mushy" centers. Also, if you are comfortable sharing your budget with this group, we can offer you suggestions on potential diamonds.

Thanks Travelgal! I am excited, but the more I get into it, the more lost I get and the more I do not know. So this forum is great!
I will try to get imagines as I keep hearing unlike round, you cannot just tell what is a "good" vs "bad" radiant diamond. Any help or suggestions would be great. The more brilliant and scintillation the better.

I was looking for a rectangular Radiant with a budget of maximum $10,800...

Let me check. I didn't see any that I loved on James Allen yesterday (easiest to find for me because of the images and videos), but I will do some digging and show you styles of radiants so you can see what one you like best.
