Diamond opinions

There is basically no good reason to send a diamond of this carat weight and this supposed color and clarity to IGI rather than GIA, so the fact that it has an IGI report rather than a GIA report should be a red flag. In this case, it looks very tinted for an "I" and it isn't cut well. Unfortunately something saying "Excellent" on the report isn't enough to guarantee that a diamond is as sparkly as possible.

Here's a video from Jann Paul comparing a bad GIA "Triple Excellent" to a "super ideal" cut:

I would suggest that you get a GIA-graded diamond with better proportions and symmetry. It's hard to know what color grade this would have gotten if it had been graded by GIA, but you could certainly safely look at GIA J-K if you're considering this diamond.

Are you in Canada? What's your budget and how are you planning to set this diamond? Is it for you or as a gift? If it's a gift, is the recipient involved in the selection process?

Hello Nana32792!
Here's the rotational video for this one:

Right off the bat I'm seeing evidence of pavilion twist, light leakages, and possible transparency problems with the diamond crystal material. It's also IGI Excellent instead of their higher Ideal cut grade, which probably isn't saying much since pre-IdealScope reports isn't as strict as GIA Excellent, which isn't as strict as AGS Ideal.
This is definitely one that I'd say approach with caution and view it in as many different lighting conditions as possible before you financially commit to it.

No, I’m not in Canada, the diamond is for me as an upgrade from a 2ct I i2. My budget isn’t limitless. This diamond is amazing in person.

I have no problem with the IGI grading and the diamond is gorgeous in person.

If youre happy with it then that's all that matters.

It's not well cut and not one we'd recommend, but if you like it in person then that's great.

That’s a great I2 bc I assume you can barely see those white inclusions unless you’re really looking. We’d love to see photos if you get it!

Nana32792- you've specifically asked for others opinions on this diamond, which DejaWiz and LoveDogs happily provided based on their expertise- which is EXTENSIVE- but you sound defensive on what they suggested? Either you want opinions or you don't? If you love it, then it really doesn't matter what anyone thinks- but if you are looking for legitimate advice on a potential "investment" piece, then I would heed their collective advice and experience. All we want to do in this community is help and get you the best bang for your buck, and based on the numbers, it appears you can do better- but again, if you love it, it's a moot point. Either way, this can be an emotional buy, and I hope you end up with something you truly love, and if you think this is it, then this is it!

I’m not defensive just stating the facts.

It’s a SI1 and it is eye clean. If I can get good pics I will post them!

The fact is that all diamonds sparkle, especially under jewelry store lighting, but this one doesn't sparkle as much as it could if it weren't cut poorly to make sure it hit 4 carats. If you're happy with it then that's one thing, but we're telling you that you can definitely get a diamond that sparkles more than this one. You didn't share the price, which also impacts how reasonable of a purchase this is. Again, this isn't what anyone here would recommend that you spend your money on, but you're the one wearing it.

All diamonds are pretty in jewelry store lighting. Have you ever seen a very well cut diamond in person?

I promise you are paying more for this diamond with an IGI report than you would for an equivalent diamond with a GIA report — and I don’t mean a stone with the same specs with a GIA report, I mean a diamond with these characteristics graded by GIA. That is why the cutter sent it to IGI, because they knew they could make more money with that report selling it to consumers who don’t know better.

Hello Nana32792!
Here's the rotational video for this one:
Huge table, flat crown, poor cut precision. Looks about K/L color by GIa standards. I have no issue with tinted diamonds. I have issue with vendors trying to hide the true specs of a stone behind a liberal grading report. And I have issue with stones that are not well cut and won’t sparkle as they could.

If this is priced substantially below well cut KL SI2 stones from GIA and you value size above all else, it could be an acceptable buy. Just go in eyes open.
