Has anyone gone back and forth about what diamond shape is their favorite?

When I first started looking at rings and stones I loooooved emerald cuts

I just thought they were so classic and elegant looking, yet different from what you see everyday. I then moved onto ovals, and now I can''t get enough of chunky cushions! How do you reconcile this?? My BF will undoubtedly consult me before he buys, and I have no idea what to tell him! How do you choose? For those who are already engaged, did you experience any indecisiveness about shape?

I''ve always been a RB kind of girl. I appreciate other stones, but I feel like the RB is the most "me" on any given day. I really want a cushion gemstone ring in a halo setting and I love unique sidestones...A knows b/c of my finger size (7.75) that I love the finger coverage of a 3-stone, and for the sidestones I love Calla or trillion cut diamonds...but nothing beats a classic RB for the center stone in my book!

When my husband and I were looking at engagement rings and stones, I didn't want a RB. I was positive that I wanted an asscher. We had a local jeweler bring in a few stones and while I loved them, the shape wasn't flattering on me. We considered an EC after deciding to move away from asschers, but again, the shape didn't look quite right. What did I end up with? A RB with pear sides -- nothing like what I thought I wanted, but I love it.

ETA: If I were to ever do something different, I'd consider a cushion, an OEC, and an OMC. I love my ring though and I don't think I'll change (at least for a LONG time), but I do love those stones.

When I first started looking, I really liked asschers and emerald cuts. Saw them in the store window and just wanted them. But unfortunately, I never actually got to try one on for size. All that was available for me to see was rounds when I went to a BM. I had gone to other BM stores with my girls, and I was starting to warm up to rounds. Then I finally went to a BM with my SO and fell in love with cushions. Cushions was just perfect for me and my personality. It had the sparkle of the round with the rectangularness of the emerald cut. Anyways, my best advice to you is to see what you like on your finger. Rounds are classic, a lot of people have them. I wanted something different and a bit unique and I feel that I got exactly that. You may not like the way rounds look on you or maybe emerald cuts doesn''t quite give you the tingles. Go out there and see what you fall in love with. Then give your BF the option between the cuts. You can like more than 1. That will just give him more options when it comes down to the nitty gritty and you''d be surprised either way.

Yup, I''ve always wanted a RB. Even though I think other cuts are beautiful, RB is and has always been my favorite. If you can''t decide on a cut, maybe you can tell him which ones you like the most and have him surprise you?

Yep! I was indecisive too! I always thought we`re gonna get an RB. When we started looking at rings in jewellery stores we fell in love with princesses, so we got a princess solitaire. As much as I loved my princess e-ring, it wasn''t quite ''it''. Fast forward to many months ago: we started talking about an upgrade.... for a while I was set on going with a cushion, but in the end we went with an RB and we couldn''t be happier. Even my DH, who originally was very anti-RBs, can''t now stop looking at it!

I always thought I wanted an RB. But then I found (old cut) cushions, and I was a goner. Unfortuantely, they''re only appealing to me in larger sizes (1ct+), and that''s not the size I wanted. So then, I was confused!

However, we have decided to use an heirloom diamond, which happens to be an RB. To me, there is something very classical about a solitaire RB engagement ring, and that''s what I''ll be getting. I know it''s something I can never get tired, or bored with, because there''s so many ways to make it look different. Plus, it was given to my mother by my grandparents, and I hope to pass it on to my future child. Nothing can replace that sentimental value

Keep in mind that you do have other fingers that you could get rings for in the future!

I always thought I wanted a princess, or Asscher stone, but after trying on rings, I fell for the RB.

How do you decide? Try on as many different shapes as you can. Study each one and try to visualize it as your stone shape.

I took the ass-backwards route and chose setting (yes, FH asked me to) before the stone shape. Although I do love the classic shape and sparkle factor of a round, I am in love with chunky cushions. If you are thinking that a chunky cushion is your dream stone, I would advise that you or or FH contact GOG. Not sure if you are aware but there is a wait list for his chunks. Another very reputable cushion vendor is Mark at ERD.

I fell in love with Trillions the first time I saw them, so that was a no brainer, though I did wonder if it would be too ''non-traditional. In the end, I realized that it was more ''me'' than any other shape. Honestly, I find almost anything more interesting than a RB, so I''m an outlier in that sense. My problem came with choosing a setting! I was sooooooo very indecisive about what I like, and thank god FI decided for me, it was a surprise, not what I would have chosen, but I love it!

Honestly, diamonds are so beautiful... that''s why we have 10 fingers!

Love them all... indulge yourself!

How long have you been really been looking into diamonds?

I see that you''ve only been a member for a few weeks. If you''re anything like me it will take a few weeks (if not months) of pricescope and looking at pictures to really hone in on what you like. When I came to pricescope I thought I wanted a princess for sure... which is so odd cause I really wouldn''t be happy with one now after seeing so many other options. Then I transferred to emeralds as well, I just love enlongated shapes, but I missed all the sparkle. Then I found chunky cushions and understood what love is really like haha.

Its like dating, when you first get here you put all your love into one stone after another to come to realize that its not the best fit for you and that you''ve found something that suits you better haha until you finally find THE ONE.

Give it some more time and hopefully, like me, you''ll find that your opinions become much steadier and you just shift your opinions slightly instead of the crazy rollercoaster of opinions i had the first few weeks i was here.

Hope that helps!

I''m totally in love with asschers, but FI''s grandmother gave us an heirloom ring that has an OEC in it and it is beautiful.

Thanks for all the responses! I am really just beginning to look at diamonds, and will definitely take some time on PS to just look at pictures and try to be cognizant of what continues to catch my eye.

A few of you suggested that I should actually try some rings on which is an excellent idea. I haven’t done this yet—mostly because I feel silly doing it as we’re really not planning to get engaged for another year—but maybe I’ll go in and pretend! Anyone have a good alias?

I’m curious, what shapes tend to look best on larger fingers? I have a 6.75

I’m curious what folks think about lilyfoot’s point? RBs are just so classic and timeless, while some shapes tend to go in and out of style. Does anyone else worry about people being able to “date” their engagement by looking at their hand?

Hmmm... I definitely think shapes can be more or less popular depending on the decade, but I think the setting is more likely to date your engagement than the actual center stone itself. I can think of a setting style for every shape I know of that makes it look modern so I have a hard time believing that a shape really "goes out of style" at all. You can always consider resetting your stone at a later time if your setting seems out of date and if finances are available. I''ve seen a few older PS members reset their stones into more modern settings but I''ve never seen that require them to change their center stone.

My first ering- always wanted a Princess, love it and still do, five years upgrade ended up with a RB for the face up and sparkly factor

I think I;ll just have to ask for several different diamond shapes for our anniversaries - it''ll solve the indecisions

I wanted a princess because rounds were too common and in NZ, unless you want to pay a small fortune, that''s usually your options as far as shape is concerned.

However, when we looked at rings and tryed some stuff on everything felt very "meh" untill I put on a low coloured pear with oval sides....mmmmm
18.gif
so that''s what I ended up with, not at all what I thought I would but certainly very unusual

I never really had a preference until my FI bought me a princess 0.50ct promise ring. After that I decided that I wanted a princess solitaire ering. I love my princess especially as I never see anyone else with a solitaire like mine (anything over 1ct is quite rare in the UK) although I do see lots of RBs.

I would suggest that you try some different styles on before you decide. I have long fingers which are supposed to suit the princess cut......

Absolutely!

Before I ever talked about getting engaged, I always thought I wanted a princess cut diamond with sidestones. However, once I actually started really engagement ring shopping--I hated, absolutely hated the way princess cut diamonds looked on me. The sharp 90 degree angles of a square just did not suit me. I later fell in love with cushion cuts, but once I found my DREAM setting, I knew the best diamond shape was definitely a RB. So although my setting kind of helped me decide which diamond shape was best for me, I also must add that I love the fact that RBs face up larger than both princess and cushion cuts of the same carat size...AND nothing beats the fire and brilliance of a well cut RB!

Good Luck deciding!

Before I even really thought about getting engaged, I was in love with the Tiffany Lucida ring, I was sure it was the one. By the time I started looking to give my SO ideas about what to get me, I was hooked on RB''s. I''ve always loved the look of solitaires, and that has never changed, but my shape search ended with PS when I discovered chunky cushions

. It was love at first sight. Those big flashes of light in GOG''s videos made my heart melt.

It took me about 6 months to finally decide what shape to choose...i originally wanted an asscher/cushion...then fell in looove with the pear shape and am sticking to it....my bf is talking with our jeweler now and planning on making the final step on choosing the diamond and getting it made :) but as one of my friends suggested...why not have 2 rings if i go back and forth in between the shapes :) maybe suggest going with 2 rings?? good luck with whatever u choose :)

yes! two rings! i think this is the perfect solution
2.gif

i really want to go try some on. would you all suggest a tiffanys or something more like a jared in terms of having a range of shapes and sizes?

We got my engagement ring and wedding band from WF (setting inspired by one at Knox), but before we ordered it, we went to a ton of stores to browse. We didn''t have a Tiffany near us at the time, so we went to other stores, both independent jewelers and Jared. Jared doesn''t have the best reputation for having quality stones at good prices, but we just focused on how certain shapes and settings looked. It was a good way to figure out what shapes looked good and what we liked best. Once we narrowed down the shape and whether or not we wanted a solitaire or a three stone, we focused our search with various PS vendors.

For a long time, diamond shapes were not even on my radar! Soon after I met my now-DH, I fell in love with ECs. I like Asschers, RBs, and cushions (particularly the lovely chunky ones from GOG) quite a bit too, but nothing does it for me like an EC. Fortunately, DH listened to my preference and got me a beautiful EC engagement ring.

I definitely understand indecision--I struggle with it quite a bit! My advice would be to just keep trying them on until you find what looks and feels best to you. For the shapes that don''t make the ultimate cut for your e-ring, remember that there are still RHRs, pendants, bracelets and earrings you could get later
