because they are use to the size. to the casual observer, the stone(s) will always look bigger.in other words.....your friends won''t notice your diamond had shrunk. hummm...will they ?

I doubt observers will notice shrinkage...unless it''s shrinkage of their own rings after comparing theirs'' with yours!!

You bring up an interesting point. I have, on more than one occasson,
caught other women staring at my ring, then putting their hands up to look at their own ring.

Why? When I see someone with a beautiful ring, I will admire it from afar,
but I don''t look at my ring to compare.

Maybe it''s insecurity...maybe it''s envy...maybe the woman herself isn''t happy and is looking for something to make her happy.

Maybe her husband is in the market for an upgrade and she''s imagining your ring on her finger?

Cflutist, I think that because your stone is so big, that is why they look at their ring to compare. Most women have stones from .50-1.00 cts. I know I have a .75, so when I''m next to a girl with a 3 carat stone, I feel kinda silly! It doesn''t make me appreciate my ring any less, but I do kinda get envious. Now if I was sporting the 3 carat stone, when I saw a stone I liked, say a girl sitting next to me with a pretty stone, albeit smaller, I wouldn''t probably glance at mine afterward to do the "comparison" thing! Just my opinion!

I hate to say this phenonemon happens at any size. I just traded a emerald cut three stone back to Tiffany''s, purchased from them. It had 5 carats total, 3 in the center and one on each side. I now have a much larger stone, but it does not look as big as I think it should. I think it is primarily because Tiffany''s selects very well cut stones, and since this is an emerald, there is weight in the depth of the stone. It is a gorgeous stone, but my friend, who has one about the same size, has a stone that appears much larger on the top. It is not from Tiffany''s and may not technically be properly cut, but it does look bigger to the eye. I realize she has something like a size 4 finger (mine is 6 1/2) and she is extremely petite, with small hands. This can also play a role in the shrinkage. If you ever think your stone looks littler than you recall, have someone with small hands try it on and admire it on them...it will look large again I am sure!

Finger size plays a HUGE role...it is unfortunate that my 3.01 ct looks monstrous on someone with size 4 but on my 7.5 finger, it loses some impact.

When i picke up my ring and put it on and looke din the mirror, I thought, "OMG, it looks FAKE." Now, i am used to it, but still love it and think it is the perfect size for me.

I think the wearer bears the burden of shrinkage...most observers don''t see the ring everyday. However, I might ask those I work with closely if my diamond has "shrunk" to them over the last year...After they call the men in white coats, I''m sure I''ll get some interesting responses.

I would have to say your a little off in your thinking there.
Case in point.. myself..
Because after hanging out on pricescope im the one that thinks she needs a bigger diamond and she is the one that doesnt want an upgrade.

Wouldn''t your wife? It sounds like you are the one into diamonds in your family, not the missus.

My mom and my sister comment that everytime they see my ring it seems to be "larger". Bless them!

The rings I looked up to as a child have shrunk. My grandmother''s 2 ct EC used to look HUGE, ditto for my mother''s 2ct ruby... Now they look a lot smaller! Then again, in this case, something really has changed to cause the shrinkage-- me!

It''s a bit like going back to a favorite place you knew as a kid...it just seems different than you recall. I remember when 2 carat seemed gigantic to me and I could not imagine having one...the times they are a changing...
