Hey All,

Long time browser, first time poster. I love this community and all the help it has provided me on my diamond searches.

I bought a 1 carat brilliant cut solitaire engagement ring that my fiancé loves. 1.8 on the HCA scale which makes it a FIC, and has a good ideal scope image in my opinion. (I’ll make a separate thread with ideal scope pics etc. at some point to see what you all think.)

As per her family’s tradition, the groom’s parents buy a set of earrings for the bride. My questions are as follows:

-What carat weight for the earrings would compliment the 1 carat diamond engagement ring?

-I have had trouble finding a website that sells diamond stud earrings that specify the cut. Ideally I would like the cut to be a super ideal cut. (No pun intended) Do online shops provide that specific service for stud earrings smaller than a carat?

- For reference my budget is ~$1,000-1,500

Thanks in advance!

First, I just wanted to say congrats on your engagement! And I love your fiancé's family tradition.

I like the idea of 1ctw. studs, but they'll exceed your budget if you're looking for an ideal cut, along with fine color and clarity. So basically, I think it's going to be a matter of choosing the quality you'd like and then buying the largest which fit inside your budget. Since cut is very important to you, have you considered purchasing a loose pair of diamonds and then having them set? There are several vendors which come highly recommended here on PS... Whiteflash, James Allen, Leibish, Rare Carat, Blue Nile, etc. You can choose your stones and then have them (or another jeweler) set the diamonds for you. I did notice that with most premade diamond studs, there's not much mention of cut quality. Good luck!

Thank you for your congratulations Autumn!

I’m open to buying a single diamond loose (that’s what we did for the engagement ring), but I feel less confident in pairing diamonds online. So we are ok with paying a little extra for that service buying online.

Yeah for sure 1 carat studs are out of the budget. My question is more what is a nice complementary carat weight for the earrings with the 1 carat engagement ring? Or does it really matter?

Thanks for looking into those sellers, I noticed too that cut for studs aren’t specified from my searches so far. I’m hoping others know of others to direct me to if there are any.

If not, then this is what I call a “happy problem” and I’ll just find a nice set one way or the other.

how do you want the studs set? in prongs or bezels? if you like the idea of bezels, they will add a bit of visual size to whatever size stone fits in the budget.
As far as what size "goes" with a 1 carat ring, I think people have different opinions on that. I don't think it matters really. But other folks might have a different opinion. And as far as picking loose stones, people on here will help you try to find a pair that match well, if that's the direction you choose to go.

Thank you Lookinagain about your set suggestion. We like the prongs setting as it matches the engagement ring setting. We aren’t so worried about the size optimization as in general she prefers more daintier styles. (She said the MAX carat she wanted for the ring was 1 carat. I didn’t complain about that request and neither did my wallet!:lol-2:)

Thank you for your thoughts on carat size, I spent months researching and reading about engagement rings and diamonds etc. and I just don’t have it in me to go any further in depth on my own for the earrings. ‍o_O So, knowing that there isn’t a common set of rules for carat pairings for rings and earrings and rather is at the discretion of the wearer is nice to know.

I will definitely reach out in the forums to help with pairing loose diamonds if I go that route. I appreciate the community and the willingness to help.

I hope though that someone can recommend an online store that sells studs with cut grades to save me the headache, fingers crossed!

If you e-mail Brian Gavin Diamonds, Whiteflash, or Jon at Distinctive Gems, any of them could source a matched pair of ideal cut diamonds in whatever type of setting you want within your budget.

If you are open to considering lab grown diamonds, I know Brian Gavin has pre-set options available. They are ideal cut, not their branded top tier but still excellent quality : https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...ab-grown-diamond-studs?variant=40424748974141 (they have a 4 prong basket setting option too).

Earring size has much more to do with the desired earlobe coverage than any relationship to the size of the e-ring from my own perspective. I have small lobes and find 6.2mm is about my sweet spot for "every day" wear. My spouse's lobes are much larger, but they prefer a 4mm size stone (which looks ridiculously tiny to me, but that's their preference so that's that).

I agree with @Autumn in New England that 1 ctw (which is .5 ct each ear) is a lovely size to go with a 1 ct ring. If .5 ct each isn't currently within budget, I'd definitely purchase the diamonds at a vendor such as Whiteflash which will allow you to easily upgrade them in the future (perhaps upgrade them for an anniversary).
