Hi, all.

I''ll apologize in advance for yet another beginner question. I''ve never bought a diamond (or for that matter jewelry) before, ever. Please bear with me!

I''d like to get some diamond stud earrings for the woman in my life, for her birthday. I''m not making a ton of money at the moment, so (yeah, I know), I''ve got around $200. However, I cashed in all my change at Coinstar, and got a $197 amazon gift card. So I can either spend $200 somewhere (where? I have no idea!) or $400 on amazon.

My ignorance about diamond jewelry is matched only by her knowledge of it. I''m a bit worried. IS amazon.com an acceptable place to buy diamond earrings? I was thinking 1/4 to 1/2. White gold. From what I understand, Cut is very important, but I seem to be unable to find Cut information on amazon.com?

Thank you all in advance, truly, for any advice.
Lex

Lex, in all honesty, you won''t get a quality pair of diamond earrings at $200 or $400. I''d suggest waiting and getting some better quality ones later on. I''ll take a quick look on Amazon and give you a couple of ideas, though!

Okay, my recommendation is to go to something like aquamarine or another colored gemstone and get her a pair of studs and a pendant.

Once you choose a pendant, look at that particular vendor and see what matching earrings they might have so they can try to match the color of the stones for you.

Good quality diamonds are just going to be too high. Here are some to save for another occasion:

I agree with DS. They just won''t be worth it at that price.

I agree-go with a nice colored stone set or save some more for the diamond studs. Or, maybe these, if you are a bit flexible?

Like everyone else said, for that budget, you won''t get quality earrings. Possibly save up longer and give your girlfriend diamond earrings as a b-day gift? In the meantime, you could use the Amazon Gift Card for a less expensive piece of jewelry.

After you save up, a couple ideas would be:

4-prong .25 ctw diamond stud earrings in WG for $350

Or for a larger style

Starburst earrings:

Since your budget is better at Amazon, this year I''d look there, but for the future, save up - finding fun pieces on Amazon is doable, but something like studs ... I doubt it. (With the best of intentions, my sweet husband bought me a set of tiny ones on there, and ... eesh. The sentimental value is high, but the quality is so low that even he''s like, well, maybe save them for our eventual daughter as a set of starter earrings.) Something like this filigree heart pendant might work (70% off for a price tag of $285), or maybe something like this cute snowflake pendant (also 70% off for a tag of $314). I''m a big believer in getting as much bang-for-the-buck as possible, so I went to their sale section, looked for the biggest savings, and selected a category. While I''m not sure I believe in their "sales," a cursory glance indicates that similar things *are* selling for the hugely inflated original prices, so ... poke around and see what you can find to suit her taste! Come back and ask if you''re torn - this is the kind of stuff we love.

Ditto DS, but $400 is a fantastic budget for some gold/white gold or pearl jewelry and amazon has some great pieces.

Hi again, everyone!

Thank you all, so very much, for the responses. I completely agree, studs are out. Maybe someday.

I swear I've paged through all 84,000 earrings on amazon... while I do agree that amazon isn't the ideal place to buy jewelry, I do have this $200 on there. I bumped the budget out to $300 ($500 on amazon). This is the absolute ceiling, though. If anyone has any thoughts on my list, I'd love to hear 'em. They're ordered by Priority how much I like them. I'm leaning for the clovers.

Thank you, all, again, so much. You've really saved me!

Please don't buy ANY kind of diamond earrings on Amazon...they just won't sparkle, which is why we are advising you against studs there as well. If you can stretch your budget even $50 more for those Whiteflash earrings MC posted you are really really not going to regret it. Especially if she has a ton of diamond knowledge, you just want to avoid it, it'll be a waste of your money to buy the amazon earrings...

On the other hand there are some nice pearls on Amazon, what about that?

If you want diamonds to say "I bought diamonds" you can find them for any budget.
If you want diamonds your lady will love and others will comment on you should heed the advice you''re getting.

What do you guys think about these:
http://www.amazon.com/Diamond-4-Prong-Earrings-SI1-SI2-Clarity/dp/B000IL7ODW/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&s=jewelry&qid=1227997109&sr=1-23

Maybe not an ideal cut but they are SI clarity and very good cut (supposedly).

Those Whiteflash princess cuts are sure to sparkle!

These are really pretty also and you can get them with all diamonds or diamonds and pink sapphires.

Those WF ones could be a good option.

I think the WF earrings would be very nice.
