Hello,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I''m looking to propose very soon and have been doing quite a bit of research over the past month or two. I have a good idea what I''m looking for with regards to the 4 C''s, but am looking for help regarding other, more specific aspects.

Basically what I''m looking for:

Carots: Around 1.25
Shape: Round
Cut: Ideal
Color: G
Clarity: VS2
Stone Budget: 7500ish
Preferred Vendor: James Allen

For the size and budget, do these seem like good stats to aim for? I''ve actually got my eye on a specific stone at James Allen which I''m hesitant to post here for fear of someone poaching it from under me. If this board supports private messaging, possibly I can send the info to someone? Also if anyone has any suggestions for stones, preferably through James Allen, it would be appreciated :)

Thanks very much for the help.

Welcome!

Sorry no PM at the moment. If you are worried about poaching post the following info, we can get a good idea from that plus any images if you have them.

Colour, clarity and carat weight ( although not essential) as we have an idea of what you are looking for.

type of lab report and cut grade
depth %
table%
crown and pavilion angles
girdle thickness
polish and symmetry grades
star and lower girdle facet percentages
diameter in MM
fluorescence if applicable

Thanks! This is what we call a shallow shallow, both crown and pavilion angles are too shallow to work well together, the usual effect is obstruction. This is where the diamond darkens at close scrutiny due to the viewer's head/ body blocking light to the stone. I would only consider this diamond if it was being sold by a trusted vendor who had an idealscope image and could inspect the diamond for obstruction carefully.

Here is a video on head obstruction lower right, titled the same by Garry H.

Thanks both of you for the info and suggestions - exactly why I came here :)

I will keep poking around and am sure I will be back to this thread!

Just shout if you need any more assistance!

Thanks to the suggestion of Stone-Cold, I have a stone on hold. Is there any reason to request the idealscope, or do the stats tell the story? I personally wouldn''t be able tell anything from it, but I just want to be sure I''m making a good purchase :)

The Idealscope image will show you if there is any light leakage. The diamond Stone-Cold found for you is very well cut and should perform well. The Idealscope image would just be a final check for your peace of mind in this case.

However, if you don't want to wait, you could go ahead and order the stone and take it to an independent appraiser or order your own Idealscope and look at the stone yourself under the scope. James Allen has a very good return policy, so you would have 30 days to return it if it didn't measure up to your expectations.

Are you planning to have JA set the stone?

Ditto sara, just to make sure only. If you are in a rush, you can skip that step.

How long does it usually take for vendors to turn around an idealscope image? Time is indeed of the essence here.

I do plan on having the stone set by James Allen, and was going to have it appraised locally for peace of mind.

I think 2 days is the norm for JA.

The diamond has pretty safe numbers, Idealscope is always good to confirm but it depends on your comfort level.
