Hi, I would like to ask your opinion about having my 1.0ct diamond set in a rodium plated sterling silver setting. I know that historically, diamonds were commonly set in silver, and more recently the trend to put diamonds in silver has resurfaced. However, I have not been impressed with how most of these promotional quality diamonds look in the silver at all.

Here''s my situation. My 1.0ct is currently in a gold 6 prong tiffany like setting, which I really do not like and the prongs snag on everything. I found the mounting I would love to get for it. It is an Overnight Mounting, #83746, if you would like to look it up. But with gold prices the way they are right now, I can''t quite afford it. My jewelry store is currently selling the rodium plated silver store display for this ring, for $25 bucks, currently set with a cz. I''m thinking about snagging the mounting, because it is just lovely, and am toying with the idea of having my diamond reset into this mounting. Is there any reason to NOT do this? Are there problems with setting diamonds in silver? Is a jeweler going to look at me cross-eyed and confused if I ask him to do this for me?

Please tell me what you think?

If it's good enough for Tiffany (check out their new DBTY silver line), then I think it's fine! Silver is a strong and resistant metal. Just make sure it's a high quality silver that won't tarnish easily.

Thank you for the pic, isn''t it gorgeous?

IS silver strong enough for a diamond ring that will be worn every day? A necklace is different, it doesn''t go through the same abuse as a ring does. I have several silver rings that have been bent out of shape from seemingly innocuous events. Also think of the tarnish factor...

yes I have a lot of trouble with silver tarnishing which might be hard to clean with all those little diamonds in there...

also not sure how easy it is to replate? i also have a rhodium-plated necklace that has NOT tarnished at all and looks PERFECT. all of my silver jewelry (after storing in a drawer with anti-tarnish fabric) turned like this nasty brown color after a few months (maybe it is the climate out here?) so I have to keep it really air tight but my rhodium plated piece did not tarnish at all :) '

ETA sorry for the mini thread jack but I think the tarnish factor has a lot to do with your climate, so maybe see how your other silver pieces hold up? but rhodium plated should be fine...get the experts opinion though :)

Yes it is strong enough, modern alloy SS is a lot more tarnish resistant than in the past also.
The trick is getting the right alloy which is not always easy but the good news is that fewer are using the traditional alloy.

For some reason my Tiffany SS jewelery has never tarnished... And I have owned some pieces for over 5 years! I think there is probably variability in quality and finishing.

Reallly? Mine tarnishes badly.

Very pretty setting Doonester. I had a jeweler tell me once that silver takes a plating very well, Experts? Good luck with your project!

I think it''s a great way to test drive the setting. Then you could save up for it if it''s something you really like.

I have a jeweler who refuses to set diamonds in sterling. I have owned diamonds in sterling on a ring and I am wanting to do it again with a small loose marquise I have. I just need to find a jeweler who is willing to. With those prongs on the setting you picked, I''d try it. For regular prongs I wouldn''t honestly. But something like bezel set with Tiffany I''d do in a heart beat.

In general the more you wear sterling the less it tarnishes. At least for me, mine hardly tarnishes unless I don''t wear it.

I am surprised too - all my Tiffany jewelry tarnishes really easily. Luckily, I got some amazing magic tarnish remover.
