Hi, I recently bought a diamond for engagement ring for SGD $7800 from JannPaul. Here are the specs:
  • 1.86 carat
  • D
  • VVS2
  • Elongated cushion
  • 8X GCAL certification
Do you guys think I overpaid?

Hello and welcome to PriceScope, teahouseviolinist!
No, not necessarily - JannPaul has patented custom cut diamonds that can not be found anywhere else on the planet (legally, brand new) and their benchwork quality is elite tier. Depending on the complexity of the setting and the metal being used, $5800USD can reflect a very fair price for what you'll be getting in return.

Jann Paul is a super ideal vendor. For that quality and hand forged construction, you will pay more. That's a fair market price when you compare with artisans like Victor Canera and David Klass and then add the quality of stones like Whiteflash and Brian Gavin super ideal stones.

May you enjoy your ring for many many years to come!

Does this price include the setting? I didn't remember seeing that mentioned here or on Reddit.

Thank you for all the replies! So this does not include the band or setting. Purely the diamond itself

I'm the one who left some loooong comments on your Reddit post so I'll just reiterate here but shorter: we all get value from different things. Is having one of the most perfect cushion cut diamonds money can buy important to you? Do you love this particular specialty cut faceting pattern and shape? Because if it's yes and yes, then you aren't overpaying. Overpaying is when you could get something that you value just as much for less money. You literally can't get the equivalent diamond elsewhere because it's a JP specialty cut. There are great cushion cuts that cost less. But would you value them just as much as this one? I can't answer that and neither can anyone else.

My friend did a 4 carat with them just now but chose cvd it saved thousands you just need to ask for it

USD$5800 for just the diamond seems a bit steep in my opinion, especially since their own website shows pricing for their speciality cuts in LGD flavor up to 1.69 carats, but you can probably extrapolate what a 1.86 could/should come in at. Again, this is merely my own opinion.

I agree for the same reasons. I'm a little surprised at the price
