Did you trade / sell / keep your original ring when you upgraded?

I'm looking at upgrading my current engagement ring.

I have a 2.1 carat round brilliant set in a halo.

I am not sure weather or not I should keep it because the sentimental value will outweigh the potential sale price (as we all know diamonds aren't an investment- please don't tell my husband )

What did you do with your original ring when you upgraded and why?

I might add I am in Australia if that matters.

Thank you so much!

My first “upgrade” was a reset (halo). My second upgrade was a new set altogether. And I’ve had both reset since. I’ve also added more “upgraded” options to wear as my e-ring.

As for my original e-ring, it’s in its third and final setting.

I purchased my upgrade from Whiteflash and they purchased my original diamond (which I hadn't bought from them) and applied the trade-in value towards my upgrade. I was very happy with my experience with them.

I sold - consigned with Grace. I sold the original setting a bit before that. I tried wearing it as an necklace but didn’t like that.

I kept mine for the same reason that you mentioned. The sentimental value far outweighed the pittance I would have gotten for it.

I put it in a bezeled pendant and I wear it almost daily as a part of my neck stack.

I had my eweler make a copy and I wear them as studs. Still have the shank so I can put it back together.

Wow, I didn't know whiteflash did that. I will look into that for sure because they are on my list!
Thank you for this

I wasn't sure either but so happy I asked! I sent them my stone's GIA report, they were able to give me a "range" based on that and of course then just needed to confirm once they received it. And the trade-in value was not much different than our original purchase price so my husband was very happy (as was I)! Plus their ACA diamonds are just stunning...Good luck!

I'll have to see if I can find my original report. If not, I'll ask my jeweller. Thanks so much for this, it's definitely very helpful!

Sold it. But I’m not the most sentimental person haha

Oh and just to note because it wasn't originally purchased through Whiteflash I had to spend at least double the price of my original but that wasn't an issue since my upgrade was doubling my original stones carat weight. Good luck!

I would prefer to sell mine too but I don't want to take a crazy price for it. Can I ask where you sold yours?

Thank you. Spending twice the price won't be hard with my upgrade so I hope they can help me out. Thanks so much again xx

I kept my original e-ring when I upgraded, but to be fair my original e-ring is a CZ in white gold, so no sell price would outweigh the sentimental value. Might have been different if it was a diamond upgraded for a diamond.

My upgrade was a full on reset.
Some people choose to keep the original diamond and set it into a pendant and then adding a coloured gem to the original setting making for a lovely right hand ring.
Some people choose to or need to sell their original diamond/ring as they use the proceeds towards their new ring.
Some people are very sentimental and never change their original set no matter what.
Whatever suits you best is the best. Just remember though once sold, gone forever.

I had a very rare high color, nicely cut OEC- so to be honest so everyplace I asked was willing to buy it. Not everyone though was offering a reasonable price
