I was shooting images of some new stones today and captured this picture of dispersion in action.

The image quality isn''t great because it''s partly out of focus and there are dust particles I didn''t take time to remove. The stone also has a flaw that might present problems in setting so it won''t be added to my website.

Can anyone guess what kind of stone it is just from this image? It should be pretty easy.

Cheers

I think it''s sphene.

Goddess and T.L.,

Good guess but in this case you''ll have to think again. It''s not sphene.

Demantoid?

I''m probably totally wrong, but peridot?

Harriet and Laurel,

Good guesses but wrong this time.

I have to run a few errands so it may be a few hours before I respond to further comments.

Garnet? Andradite? Mali?

lemon quartz?

Back earlier than expected.

Score a win for Harriet! It''s a Mali grossular garnet which, as most here know, can contain small amounts of the andradite species, making it one of the most "fiery" garnets.

This particular stone has a refractive index of 1.77, right at the dividing line between the grossular species and grossular-andradite (trade names Mali and Grandite).

Hope you had fun with this.
