Do moissanites really look like this?

I’ve heard of moissanites years ago and only saw one in real life way back when they were still green lol...

Now that I’ve been looking into actually purchasing, I’m seeing a bunch of brands with high quality videos where the stone looks CRAZY (in a good way)

Then I go to some other moissy companies and their photos and vids are less impressive lol.

Wondering if it’s just these companies knowing how to use lighting and equipment or if the newer moissys really are this beautiful!

My August Vintage ideal cut hearts and arrow moissy really does look that good. It’s gorgeous!

I also bought a 8mm OEC from diamondrensu from India and I wasn’t nearly as blown away.

So I think how beautiful it is depends on similar things that diamonds depend on: cut and quality of material

I have one and people assume it's a diamond, they're confused when I explain what it is. There are good ones and lots of bad ones out there though so you have to choose them carefully or pay the premium for a brand that is selective in what they sell.

Moissanite looks its best outside in natural light; that’s why a lot of vids/pics are taken near a window or outdoors.

If you want to see moissanite at its worst, look at Ring Come True’s Instagram. The double refraction haziness is very apparent in her older pics. Her newer ones are a little better.

That’s funny that you mention this account. This is definitely one of the accounts where I saw their moissys and thought “meh”. Wasn’t sure if it was how they took pictures, or if they just used subpar stones

I’m still very new to all of this; I don’t know what to look for in stones. My eyes can’t pick out if the cut is good or not lol I just see some accounts on IG and love how their stones sparkle... other than that, I can barely tell if I’m looking at an H&A or a Brilliant most of the time. It’s not too obvious to me

I opted to pay a premium to get one from August vintage in the hearts and arrow cut since I trust Johnathan to be critical of cut and quality and stand by his products.
He’s having a 25% discount on his moissy right now which lessed the price gap for me. But personally I don’t mind paying a few hundred extra for a “mind clean” ideal cut and color. Not to mention the customer service.

That being said I also have a French cut band from tianyu that I love and ordered a moissy custom made pendant because the price was right for something I might not wear daily.

For something like an ering though I personally would go with a higher quality moissy for AV or LAD or Amora or one of the other branded moissy cutters.

There is definitely a difference in quality depending on who/where you purchase your stone from. I purchased an Amora Gem Ultra from Better Than Diamonds. It looks amazing, no double refraction looking straight at it. It doesn't throw rainbows nearly as much. It has a nice table and can not be distinguished from a real diamond. When I took it to my jeweler to set in a diamond halo, he wanted to know where I got it from and now he offers it to his customers.

If you post on the fabulous fashion forum, people will come help with recommendations on where to buy and how to pick a good one. I ordered a C&C H&A F1 stone from an ebay vendor and just lucked out honestly, I didn't know what I was doing. I've heard the quality varies.

It sounds like people have had good luck with the Tianyu round brilliant moissy and there is a long thread on that with lots of photos. I'm guessing many jewelers get their moissanite from Tianyu and Starsgem....it's cheaper to buy direct from them but riskier because of what a pain it is to send things back overseas. Also it doesn't need to be H&A to be beautiful but those will have ideal proportions - older moissy was cut with a big flat table & low crown that looks weird in profile view.

Also there's another forum/website I don't think I can name here with lots of discussion on moissanite and photos/videos from people comparing different stones. I found it helpful when I was looking at making a purchase....best of luck! Whatever you choose, make sure there's a good return policy just in case!

I purchased a C&C F1 from a seller on DB and unfortunately, it was a dud. It was a private sale so no returns. After that happened, I decided to get the Amora. That ugly ring is still sitting in my jewelry box. :angryfire:

that sucks! :angryfire::angryfire::angryfire:
DB has been hit or miss for me, and misses are too costly when it comes to this kind of stuff....
i've heard C&C quality control is not great which is really criminal considering their prices.

Nobody should be buying their moissanite anymore. There's much better out there! I can't wait to receive my StarGem OMC, I'm pretty sure it's better quality than most C&C stones.

I was actually told by Jonathan at AV that C&C stones are the LEAST diamond-like moissanite on the market. That’s a pretty bold statement but I tend to agree. The flat crown is a dead giveaway IMO.

I was going to buy a ring set on MCO because their videos of their rings and stones look so beautiful... I guess I need to retrain my eyes lol!

IMO, cut is just as important in moissanite as it is in diamond. A well-cut moissy will look absolutely stunning! A poorly-cut one, not so much.

I had a great experience working with Jon at August Vintage, Inc. on my new ring. Mine is an August Vintage Cushion moissy and it’s everything I hoped it would be! The light performance is just amazing!
