So I have the dress (yay!), and I have the shoes, but I wanted to get a sash that matches the shoes, and I'm struggling. The shoes have serious sentimental value, but they're a funny color and I haven't found any ribbon/sash/scarf in person that matches them. I found some nice ribbon online, but I'm not at all sure which color will be closest. Part of the problem is that the shoes photograph funny, so I'll post a few pictures so you can see...

Here's the dress. It's off white with an ivory sash. [It's also for sale this December if another shorty out there wants it]

Shoes with flash

Shoes without flash

Shoes peeking out!

Sash A I feel like the teal here is close to the shoe color, and I like that's its verigated, but it might be too busy against the lace.

Sash B I think it might be too bright.

Sash C I'm afaid it's too dark!

Sash D I think the white part might not work...

Thanks Ladies!

I''m not so sure the colored sash will look right. I''m shorter too and I found that if I did a contrasting ribbon like your sash, it just emphasized my lack of height. I''d try it with a ribbon of any blue and see if you like the basic look of a colored sash. Then hunt for the right color. Also, you won''t really even see your shows so if the sash is in the same color family that will be good enough. If you are really hooked on having the same color sash, you could probably buy white and have it customed dyed to match.

Another idea, how about jewelry that has the teal color in it? Blue Topaz, Aquamarine, Blue Zircon could all work.....

I'm not trying to be mean but I just don't love any of those. I would keep the ivory sash shown in the photo of the dress and just wear the shoes as your bit of color. If you're really stuck on having a colored sash, then maybe you can buy some cheap ribbon in different colors and see what works. I guess I just like the idea of the bride "all dressed in white" and then she has funky colored shoes on! It shows your personality without being matchy matchy. Gorgeous dress, by the way!

So here''s me in a similar dress with a blue sash and I think it''s OK. I don''t like the Ivory sash, I don''t think it complements the dress well. I might be able to go sash-less, but the dress is currently being altered, so I can''t try it to see. The top is a faux wrap style, so the sash is the transition point into the straight skirt.

I was originally going to wear olive and had someone lined up to dye it the colors that I wanted, but I decided the sentimentality of the shoes was more important, and I didn''t like the olive jewlery I''d bought once I had the dress. Now I''ve procrastinated long enough that I don''t think I can get anyone to dye it to match the shoes in time .

The jewlery I have now is a family pearl bracelet (also Ivory) and a moonstone necklace that''s also sentimental and has a blue cast. I thought about getting this necklace to go with it, but the silver and ivory/offwhite is kinda icky in person.

Maybe I should try is sashless? Thanks for the advice!

Where are you getting these sashes from? Have you seen them in person? I am 5''2 and had a red sash added to my dress. I loved the way it looked! What I did was ordered samples of ribbon from www.romanticflowers.com then ordered riboon. Might be worth looking into. Its really hard to tell those colors on computer swatches!

The sashes are silk ribbon from MJ online. I can''t find them in person; I''ve tried all my local craft stores. The swatches would be $5 each, plus shipping, then another 30-50 for the right color, all within three weeks. And I''m already about 3X over my budget!

but.....

Ms Flutter, you are an angel! I think that company you sent me has the same brand of hand-dyed silk ribbons that I was looking at, and they have this dupioni peacock ribbon which I think will be a dead-on match!
Do you think that would be on the aqua-blue sample card? http://www.romanticflowers.com/samples_ribboncards.html

Thanks!!

I think the two new options are the best. In terms of color, I think the petrol blue one seems closest to the shoes. Velour and silk are very different though, and I''m not sure which would be better. I think I would ask for swatches, or order a yard of each since they''re pretty cheap. That way you can see what the color really looks like and which material you prefer.

And just to complicate things a little more, what about looking for a paler version of the blue-green shoe color (maybe the sea sprite duponi?), so that you tie in the shoe color, but don''t have the strong contrast that might cut you at the waist. This would be more like your dress picture with the blue sash, which I think looks really nice.

I love your dress (in fact i am trying to choose b/w that exact watters dress with a darker underlay and a maggie sottero gown)

When i tried on that dress the salesperson told me that a colored sash would make me look shorter (i am 5''4--don''t know how tall u are)
I didn''t notice it at first, but when I tried a sash with the same tone as the underlay of the dress I did look leaner and maybe a bit taller.

*however* it is your dress/your day and the green is lovely, so unique, and with the vintage looking shoe it is very bold and (iam assuming) very you. You could always wear the green sash for the cermony and then a cream sash (that blends with the dress) for the ceremony

let us know what u decide.

P.S. i like sash a
P.P.S; i think it would also be fine to ''just'' have the coloured shoe. I saw a bride do this in a Martha mag. she had a monique l''huillier lace dress and a funky pink shoe--i loved how it looked!

I''m not trying to be mean at all, but no matter what color the sash, the dark navy shoes just look wrong to me. I understand they have serious sentimental value, but I''m not sure I see that it''s worth making your outfit look wierd. Maybe you could swing these shoes with your rehearsal dinner dress (which wouldn''t have to be white...) To me, it just looks really strange having dark shoes with a wedding dress....

sorry - just my thought would be -- ooops, the bride got her white shoes muddy in the parking lot & she had to borrow someone''s shoes!

Aussie

Thanks everyone!
Just to note, this isn''t a big wedding, it''s me, my finace and two witnesses, so I''m not too concerned about the "but she doesn''t look like a bride" stuff. I wasn''t even going to get a white dress, but I couldn''t find anything else I liked. There''s a very informal reception a week later, so that''s just a skirt+sweater affair (for those of you who saw that thread last month, the groom isn''t going to wear his suit, so I''m skipping reusing the dress). I know the shoes are wierd. One of my friends hates them, the woman doing the alterations hates them... but I love them.

Hence the shoes stay, the sash is negotable. My only concern is that the groom thinks I look good!

I think I''m between the original Sash A which is a little funky or the peacock Dupioni or no sash at all. I''ll see how it looks at the next fitting, and if it doesn''t look wierd with no sash, maybe I''ll go that way. I''m not too concerned about looking short, FI already knows I''m short! But I like dupioni and the slightly lighter color, and I think it''s similar to the room we''re using.

It turns out they don''t have the velour ribbon anyway.

I''ll let you know how it turns out, thanks everyone for all the suggestions!

I think the shoes are cute and funky, and show your personality. It''s great. Out of all the colors, I think the petrol blue would work best with your shoes but I am not loving the velour texture.

WHy not just order a sample of each color? They should not be too expensve as samples and will give you much better idea of the "real-life" presentation.

sounds like a very special, intimate affair

I''d go with Sash "A" And I love your dress!!

Honestly, I''m not diggin any of these. I think with the antique look of your lace dress these ribbons are a little too modern looking. Have you thought of making your own, or having a mother, aunt, grandma (anyone who can sew) make one for you?? You could go to the fabric shop with the shoes and find a fabric you love. It wouldn''t be a tough sewing job or expensive.

You might look for someplace that carries hand-dyed silk ribbon, like the hanah line of hand dyed silk ribbon: http://www.artemisinc.com/ or http://hanahsilkribbon.com/. It's totally rich and luxurious looking, but at the same time it's a slightly lighter weight than the doublefaced satins, and I think it would compliment the soft lace in your dress nicely. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find a site for the manufacturer or distributer that might be able to point you towards a local The artemis site indicates that they're distributors, so they might be able to point you to a local outlet. (I've come across this ribbon in nicer gift/antique-type shops.) Good luck!

Thanks everyone!

kcoursolle- I''ve thought of making my own, and I do sew a little, but we only have one fabric store here that I can get to on public transportation, and I didn''t find anything there.

To everyone who''s recommended buying swatches- It''s a great idea, but for some reason most of these ribbons are only available by the blot or in 10 yard lots, so I can''t just order one yard. The original place I found is going to charge $7 for a 4in swatch, which I think is more than a little ridiculous. The place MsFlutter recommended has swatch cards, and I''ve emailed them to see which of the many blue cards I should get to see the ribbons I''m interested in, and I haven''t heard back yet. I can get the peacock dupioni or copper patina there in 10 yard pieces. They don''t actually have the petrol blue

MINIMS- Most of these that I''ve posted are hand dyed silk ribbons, and I think they''re all the same manufacturer as the ones you posted. Once again those companies only sell either entire bolts or 3 yard pieces ( I probably need 4 yards and I don''t think sewing two together will look great).

And Aussie thanks for the well wishes, I hope you don''t think I was being snarky, it''s just a different kind of event. Think more like Jorman''s wedding.

I think I''ll try it without the sash and see how it looks, I should have a fitting next week. In the mean time I might buy the Sash A copper patina ribbon or midnight star anyway and see if it''ll work.

Thanks!

Sorry to bump my own thread again...

Here''s a not-so-pretty collage of a pretty acutate picture of the shoes and the final three ribbon choices. I ordered two ribbon cards from the place Ms Flutter reccommended, the "aqua" and the "slate" blues. I hope I picked the right ones, I still haven''t heard from their CS people. Anyway, the collage is here. On the left we have midnight star, on the right copper patina (aka Sash A) and at the bottom, the dupioni in peacock. I think the Midnight Star is probably best.

MsFlutter do you remember how long it took to get your samples?

Thanks everyone!

I agree that the midnight star matches the best, but my honest opinion is that a wide (3-5") dark ivory ribbon would look the best. I got ribbon for my bridesmaid dresses from ribbontrade.com- swatches came quickly. They have some more blues to look at.

I actually didnt order the swatch cards. I was in a hurry so I ordered large amounts of two ribbons and gave the extra to my seamstress. I used the midori satin ribbon, it is sold by the yard.

I hope it works out well for you. I love the look of colored ribbon on dresses, it is really unique and personalizes the wedding. Several people didnt like the idea of red on my dress before the wedding. but its important to do what you want. Heres to hoping you find a perfect ribbon!
