Do you believe you''ve seen every eng. ring design ever made?

A few weeks back in Sephora, one of the clerks had a very pretty diamond eng. ring with a center stone and then diamonds around the stone (not a halo) and then diamonds down the shank and I complimented her on her beautiful ring. She immediately (without prompting) told me it's a .80 ct. center stone with some amount of smaller diamonds (I forget the ct. weight) and told me she loved the ring because it was original. Like I said, the ring was pretty, but unfortunetly, I've seen rings like that before because it seems I've seen every design possibly here on PS.

Have we all be over-saturated with designs to the point of having seen it all?

I don''t know if I''ve seen *every* ring...but PS certainly has exposed me to a lot.

Personally I think it''s hard to have an original anything when it comes to jewelry. Sure, there are always new and exciting ways of jazzing up an old classic...but once it''s done once, it will be done again and again and again until it''s just an old familiar piece.

I think everything is just "new to you" when it''s yours.

Ok, I''ll play devil''s advocate.. her ring is original... Does this mean unique?
Ok, maybe she was able to put the stone of her choice into a setting, and because no 2 diamonds are alike (because of cut, grade, etc., or if an heirloom, the history of the piece... I like to think each is individual and unique- like mine is T-REX fossilized, and yours is velocaraper!

But I totally see your point. I think we do have some degree of oversaturation of settings, and rings, and whatnot... being seeing that she is a sales clerk, and doesn''t know you well... maybe she was just trying to make small talk?

I don''t think I''ve seen it all, but nothing looks original anymore. (at least not in the "real world"

Maybe we''ve killed the joy??

It's hard to find original looking rings, as many designs are replicated, but I would not presume that I've seen every design ever made. Jewelry has a long history.

Maybe we''ve killed the joy??
We have killed the joy! Major saturation diamond syndrome. On a side-note, a friend of mine recently quit wearing her ring and I asked her about it since she suddenly was only wearing a plain wedding band and she perked up and was so excited and suprised because I was the ONLY person who noticed that she wasn''t wearing her eng. ring! I told her about my love of diamonds and that, for once, brought the joy back because it turns out she''s going to have a baby and her ring doesn''t fit any more and she wanted me to take a better look at her ring to check out the quality. Finally, for once, someone who would let me whip out my loop without thinking I was loopie.

Sometimes it feels that way, and I was definitely happier with my jewlery BEFORE I found PS. For instance, I always wanted a solitaire. Now I have one, but after seeing all the beautiful ones on PS, it''s like, should I have gotten double claw prongs? Or six prongs? Maybe a basket? Or maybe a ring with sidestones instead? It''s almost impossible to be satisfied with what you have when you are exposed to so many beautiful, different designs every day.

PS is a double edged sword.

I have diamond earring from "before" that I won''t even wear anymore. When my friend showed me her e-ring, it was all I could do to smile at her frozen spit. However, my "after" purchases have been wonderful in experience and products!!

No, I don''t think I''ve seen every design ever made. While many styles in jewelry have a long history (you can look at jewelry in a museum and see things that people are still wearing today), people are endlessly inventive. Sometimes NOT in a good way. A few weeks ago, I accidently ran into a thread on the web about ''ugly rings''. I saw some pretty amazing things. Some were horribly, horribly ugly. But some were pretty--just out of style. One of the rings I saw there was a beautiful example of a Victorian ring-- a large amethyst set in a yellow gold ring, surrounded with a ''halo'' of split pearls. It was lovely and must have been valuable, but posters went on and on about how tasteless it was.

I myself like to wear clean and simple designs--my two diamond rings are both Tiffany style solitaires set with round brilliants; I have a marquise garnet flanked by two little diamonds set in a pretty ring that is sort of curved; I have a big (6 or 7 carat) pear-shaped blue topaz set in a circular bezel; an oval emerald with in a split shank YG ring--things like that. Nothing that''s very busy--not even my filigree art deco replica ring (which has a nice CZ, not a diamond).

I have enjoyed learning about diamonds on PS, but I also love my jewelry that I got pre-PS and still wear all of it. What PS did for me, I think I explained in a post before, was to make my choice of diamonds more scientific. I always knew that when I bought a diamond, what I wanted was for it to look white and pretty and sparkly. Now I can accomplish that more easily (especially shopping online) by knowing about diamond cut and color, and I have a wide choice of vendors who are trustworthy and who have better prices than what I can find offline.

But I haven''t stopped shopping at other places. Maybe you all are going to shoot me, or ban me, but I am actually looking at a ring in Walmart now for my next purchase. It''s a RHR--one of those rings with a whole bunch of tiny little diamonds (melee) but I happen to like the pattern of this one. It looks like a flower. I KNOW the diamonds are not what I would get from a PS vendor (they are I1 or maybe even I2, I am sure and no particular color), but I don''t see that that make a great deal of difference with melee. I have seen this ring in person and it REALLY sparkles, the stones look white because they are set in white gold and it looks nice on my hand. I know its worth nothing much--but I am also going to pay nothing much for it. Comparable rings at maul stores run up to $1500 (I have compared); while this one is under $200. It doesn''t have a huge sign on it that says "bought at Walmart" so what''s the difference? Why can''t I wear this on one hand sometimes for fun and my F SI platinum solitaire on the other?

I haven''t gotten it yet and I may not end up doing it, but I like it and I put it on layaway there. I did that to reserve it, while I decide (this particular rings looks great, but another one of the same style may not look as great, which is why I did that). You can keep things on layaway for 6 months there, and then you have 90 days to return them after that for a full refund, no questions asked if you don''t like it. I wouldn''t buy my engagement ring or my anniversary ring there, but for a cheap bit of bling for fun, I think they are just fine.

I think there are always new and different things we haven''t seen, in jewelry or otherwise. I have to say I don''t think PS has really made me dissatisfied or ruined my satisfaction with my jewelry, but I guess I don''t really NEED to have everything I own be completely unique, I just need to love it and to love how it looks on me.

Not by a long shot! I never cease to be amazed at all of the different and unique designs I see here! There are many different designs that we''ve seen here, but someone always seems to find something new to show us!

I don''t think I''ve seen it all, but trips to the jewelry store are no longer pleasurable since I usually know more than the salespeople and I''ve seen everything in there... How wonderful it would be to have one of the pricescope vendors near me!

Nope! There''s astonishing variety and innovation out there: sometimes the differences between designs are small and subtle, possibly just down to a matter of proportion ... and sometimes, they''re astonishing and delightful and completely unexpected. I still feel a little frisson when I think about MAChick''s e-w marquise - I hadnt seen a design that exposed the long profile of a marquise like that before, and I find it delightful. Someday, I''ve just go to have one.

I think we see a great many possibilities on PS ... but there''s always something new to encounter. My most recent example? Chrono72''s gorgeous set with the tulips and the rose gold and the purple sapphires. Original, and gorgeous!
