I dont know what it is but I always feel so guilty when I stay home sick. I''m home today with a fever, raw nose and headache, and I still feel like I should have gone to work b/c I''m not coughing or sneezing that much anymore...like I''m tired and headachy but not beyond working. I was working up till today sort of sick and decided to take today to rest since the last few days have been stressful (just with work and the death of someone close to our family) and hope that if I take today off I''ll feel better by tomorrow and keep myself from getting worse.

I also feel guilty b/c I''m taking 2 days off in the next 2 weeks to visit my grandmother and I always tend to get sick right before a vacation! I dont know if it''s my body sayign "YOU NEED A VACA" or if it''s just coincidence (I got sick 2 weeks before taking my christmas vacation also).

anyone else feel worse taking a day off than just going to work???

You have definitely done the right thing!

It makes me so mad when people come into work when they are ill. They usually end up giving someone else their cold/flu.

H*LLLLLLLLLL NO I don''t feel bad calling in sick!

Neither should you, sweetpea.

I''ve recently changed jobs from a job where sick days weren''t really an option to a job where I can actually take a day off if I don''t feel well.

I''m still not used to it. I was an associate at a large law firm...and if something needed to be done...well, guess who was there doing it with a 101 degree fever, chills, and generally feeling like death?

And now...if I wake up and my stomach doesn''t feel right, or I have a mild fever or a bad headache...I can take the day off. I am actually expected to take the day off. so weird...Most days that I stay home (and I''ve stayed home 2 days and left early one day since I started 8 months ago) I end up feeling bad and thinking that I probably should have gone to work...so yeah...I understand completely!

I know I shouldnt but I was out Monday for a funeral, then today, and there isnt a TON of work to do right now but enough : ( I"m always worried that they wont belevie me, even though I only call out maybe once every 3 or 4 months..My boss is always telling me to take my sick days (I get sick pretty often...crappy immune system) but I feel like if I can get out of bed I should be there, but then Im like I dont want to be on the train sick, walk 1/2 mile to work from teh train station sick, sit in my cube sick etc etc. Id rather they sent me work from home to do.

My boss just emailed me back saying she''s sick too and that''s why she left early yesterday. I dont feel so bad anymore.

I find it odd when employers don''t care if you are sick. If you have a fever, that means you are contagious what''s a better consequnce, 1 person calling in sick or 20 people that that 1 person gave 19 others the flu because she was forced to come in sick?

There was a school district that closed last week by me because more than half of the faculty (sp) and students called off with the flu.

I agree Caribou...but when you are the one responsible for writing and filing an important brief before the deadline, you can''t call the court and say, hey, I''m not feeling good...so how about if I get this in to you in a couple days...nature of the beast.

And part of the reason I''m working for a judge now...

hehe, I just called in sick yesterday! But not "sick" technically, I just get REALLY REALLY REALLY bad cramps every couple of months. It sucks though because I just said "my stomach wasn''t feeling well" the first couple of times to my middle-aged male boss, and then finally he asked if I had some sort of stomach problem he should know about.

But when I told him he was super nice about it and said his wife used to get awful cramps too, so he understands. The thing that I feel most guilty about for that though is that then when I come in the next day, I''m always 100% better, so when people ask in a concerned voice, "are you feeling okay?" I''m just like, "yeah great!" forgetting that most people are actually still sick the day after calling in sick.

So then I feel like people think that I''m lying. But seriously, I almost pass out when I get the really bad cramps, there is 0 chance I could function. When I''m sick sick, I feel guilty about staying home, but also feel like I have a right to and I don''t want to make other people sick...I usually try to do a bit of work from home or at least be on email & IM with my work screenname so I''m still in touch with people...when I''m not sleeping.

Cramps are totally a valid reason for staying home, theyre debilitating (can''t spell)!

Yeah I''ve been on my email all morning back and forth with my supervisor so that we can get the appropriate information to our boss on time. After we get this squared away I''ll probably just check my email one more time. I should get on AIM too but while I want to be available, I dont want to be that available.

I called in sick yesterday...it was a mental health day

Albi, I DID pass out from cramps!! It was just last month in the grocery store I was walking around and they got really bad, but I wanted to finish my shopping. It got so bad I had to leave, but dumb me I waited in line to check out and while standing in line I fainted!! It was sooo embarrassing. I sat on the floor at the grocery store until my BF left work and came and took me home

*he is my hero for that*

So I agree, bad cramps are totally legit!
