Do you have good lighting at home for your CS?

I am trying to judge my jade stone against the ONE lightbulb I have in each room (an energy saving low wattage one at that) and everything is so dark.

Pink sapphire, spinel, even the yellow chrysoberyl ring looks dark (well not dark but the lack of light is not kind to it). Haha the only thing standing up to the one light bulb is the white diamond solitaire.

I have 2 bulbs in the kitchen so things are marginally better looking in there.

Which got me thinking! Is your lighting at home good for your CS or are you like me who lives in perpetual darkness at night?

I honestly don’t wear my rings at home so I can minimize damage but my CS gems tend to be hit or miss inside. Of course, when I buy a new gem I do what any self respecting PSer would do...I walk around the house checking it under every available light source. :mrgreen2:
My house is by no means dark but some light make my CS gems look awesome, while others make them look lackluster.

Having said all that, nothing looks better to me than my paraiba double halo ring under Target’s awesome lights!

It depends on where I am. The afternoon natural light in my bathroom is horrible for all but my pastel stones. When I turn on the lights, they all look lovely. I have to go into the main guest room for my Pakistani peridot. For some reason, it is the greenest peridot I have ever seen in that light. I showed it to my mom in that room and she didn’t even know it was a peridot.

LED and fluorescent lights so I make sure my gems look good under these lighting conditions. It is challenging though.

I love down lights.

Hehe we don't have them but I enjoy places that do.

I find the trend in restaurants these days is to be really dark. I can barely see what I'm eating and my CS is wasted!

just low Incandescent lighting, with halogen spotlights here and there. Dimmers are my favorite. House is on the lower light side because I love curtains. So probably not the most flattering for CS.

Y'all need OECs to make use of your dreamy low lights. I promise you OECs will look OEinCredible in your dim illumination.

Ugh yes! Sometimes it’s dark enough that I can’t even read the menu and have to dig my phone light out.

I have a SAD lamp and a desk/work lamp with a variable temperature LED - I use that to take photos of my nails so I think it would be ok for jewellery. :praise:

LED lights in my home and I think my stones look good in them. I do have one area (breezeway) that I call "the place where colored stones and diamonds go to die." Everything looks terrible there.

I wasn't happy when my husband replaced our incandescent bulbs wit energy saving CFL bulbs. Those were the worse...but I reminded myself that I can spend because he saves  Now he's switched to using LED bulbs and they seem better for CS.

I live in a 101 year old house that was positioned to not get any direct light. It's great for the Georgia summers, but not so great for gem admiring. Then to top it off, I work in a darkened room (ultrasound) so I practically never have "good" light. It does encourage me to go outside more, however so I have begun walking before work and during my lunch break. So that's a plus. I've been fascinated with my new to me purple spinel ring and how completely different the color is outside in the sun compared to inside under different lights. I prefer the blue-purple hue in the sunshine.

Oh I agree. I loathe the CFL bulbs.
LEDs are much better. Glad you switched.
