HI:

The Christmas season is upon us, so in my usual fashion I have created a folder for my XMas receipts. Gift receipts included. Does anyone else do this?

That said, during the year I am moderately careful with my receipts. Especially for more expensive purchases.

However, grocery bills I chuck into the recycle box as soon as I walk in the door--and the lot goes out weekly. I pay little mind to those things, and gas, flowers, video, lilquor and the like. Amost immediately into the recycle bin.

My DH is awful. Everything is gone. Often by the time he gets home and cannot find the receipt for something just purchased. Exchanges and returns are painful b/c he has no ideas where the paper trail ended......

I guess I am interested in what folks do, b/c I was behind a lady in the grocery store today and from the looks of her wallet, she had kept every receipt from any purchase over the last ten years. And yet, when you cruise Signed Pieces, I would say that 90% of items do not come with original receipts or boxes. I realize many things being sold are passed thru families and were given as gifts.

Am I the only one who has the original boxes, appraisals, certs, and receipts from purchases and gifts?

cheers--Sharon

Sharon, I do the exact same thing as you do with all yours, only I don''t have a folder for the xmas receipts, just a certain drawer.

I save all Christmas and gift receipts as well as large purchases throughout the year. I attach warranty info to them and tape them to their original packages and store them in the basement. I go through them once a year and discard any stuff for an item that is out of warranty. At the end of January I discard receipts from gifts if I know they've worked out. It used to bug DH that I saved it all. Until recently that is. We had an item that was fairly expensive break. It was eight months old and still under warranty. Because I was able to return everything according to the manufacturer's instructions, I got a replacement.

Also, I've had clothes and shoes replaced. If something shrinks that wasn't supposed to, if a shoe gets a rip across the toe, all replaced for free!!

HI:

Right-O; I have a HUGE plastic bag where I have kept warrenties/receipts for household items......last year when the bag was getting too large to shove into a cupboard I went thru it and recycled all the paper of the stuff we no longer owned......but the bag is still full!! I know this sounds obsessive, but I know where everything is when I need it.....and when I gave my "old" appliances to charity last year--I still had the original instruction guides to pass along.....

Also I store my jewellery in their original boxes............

cheers--Sharon

Yes Sharon, we do too.

I used to NOT save receipts, but for the past few years I have.

I keep a nice hatbox in my closet to store receipts and tags from clothing purchases.

In the room I wrap gifts, I have a basket that I put all receipts in.

I have to say now that I have started this system, I know if I need to return something or need the receipt, I don''t have to hunt or worse, call the credit card company and request a copy.

Obsessive receipt keeper here.

When we had bigger houses, we had home offices and I was totally organized. I had receipts for things we no longer owned. Now I have no office and no filing cabinet per se, and I can never find anything. The best I''m doing for Christmas is trying to start an envelope for receipts. So far none have made it into the actual envelope, but I''ll get that under control soon. I hope.

I thought you lost yours and were asking us if we had one!

But of course. Every receipt is kept. And I don''t do those gift receipts. Your recipient can''t get their money back if they don''t have what they want. With a normal receipt you can get your money back. §

This is why I have a huge filing cabinet -- because I am OCD about receipts.

I have a separate file for each credit card (Amex, Visa, Macy''s) and every receipt goes in the file for the appropriate credit card until my monthly CC statement arrives. Once I verify that the charges on my statements match the amounts on the receipts, I shred receipts for things like groceries, gas and restaurants. Receipts for appliances and software get attached to the warranty cards and placed in the Warranties file. Receipts for items I might return go in the Returns file. Receipts for medical expenses and contact lens solution go into the Medical Expenses Reimbursement file until I file my flex plan reimbursement forms. Receipts for anything tax deductible (or receipts for fixtures that increase the basis of my house) go in the Taxes file. I have to remind myself to go back through the files periodically to get rid of the documents I no longer need because the warranty period or return period has expired.

I save all receipts, and just stick them in a box (along with all the other paid bills) by month. At some point though I probably should get rid of the old ones. I think I have them going back over a decade...

Hello, my name is Angela and I''m a receipt pack-rat.

FI made me go through my box or receipts. And I don''t mean shoe box, I mean big old rubbermaid tote box. He made me throw some away and I found ones from 1999!

It''s strange, I don''t hoard anything but receipts....
