I’m curious how many Pricescopers wear their everyday diamond studs to bed versus removing them before bed only to put them back on again in the morning.

The way I see it:

Wearing them to bed might be uncomfortable, and could potentially stretch out the piercing hole.

However, taking them off and putting them back on repeatedly every night and morning would be annoying and could dull the notch in the post or loosen the backing’s butterfly mechanism, potentially making the studs more likely to come off and get lost during the day.

What are your thoughts?

Also, please specify what you voted, the corresponding size of your studs, and how long you have been wearing them for.

Thanks!

1ctw in martini setting- I take them out every night and if I am washing my hair.

I never take mine off only to clean them, but they are not substantial in size. They are so comfortable I never feel them -not even when I’m sleeping.

I actually rarely wear my studs because they are uncomfortable to sleep in and I don't like to take them out and put them back in. Can you say ultra lazy. I wear some small huggie loops that I thought were crazy to buy at the time, but I have worn them more than any other earring I own. They have a single prong between the stones, so even though they are small, the roundness of the stone and the stone itself stands out.

Always take off any earring before bed for the health of the piercing and the good of the earring itself. I would worry that the rubbing with the pillow would cause prongs to loosen or backs to become loose. Also it would be downright uncomfortable.

Current studs: 2.22 ctw from HPD, 6 prong setting. Have had these since February.
Former studs: 1.19 ctw, martini setting. Wore those for um....14 years or so.

I could never sleep in my studs, both for concerns about bending the posts while sleeping, but especially because I would find it highly uncomfortable. I have 3 pair, .6ctw (YG, MRB, half bezel), .75ctw (WG, OEC, 3 prong martini), and 1ctw (YG, Lightbox MRB, 3 prong martini). The .75ct pair have pointy post ends, so I would literally stab myself if I rolled over on them, and the Lightbox pair have really long posts, which for me would be impossible to sleep in.

I have 1 ctw basket set studs. I react to metals - especially my ears - and find sleeping in any earrings uncomfortable, so I always take them out.

I have 3.04 and 1.90 ctw studs. I take off all my jewelry before bed.

I have a .50tcw pair (lab stones from JA) that I bought specifically to keep in 24/7. I’m used to sleeping with studs in (I once had five piercings in each ear) and compared to the hell I went through getting my daith piercing to heal, regular studs are not uncomfortable. I’ve never had a post bend. I’ve lost a backing or two but they were loose. My current studs have been amazing. i clean them regularly.

Thanks for all those who’ve replied to date! I didn’t expect the results to be so one sided!

I currently have Blue Nile halo studs that I’ve been wearing every day and night (and in the shower) for approximately 5 years. I only remove them to clean occasionally.

Not sure about the size but with the halo, they’re wide but fairly shallow, so I’ve been able to wear them comfortably enough at night (I have a bean-type pillow I can mold/push a little crater into where my ear sits).

I’m waiting for an upgrade to arrive in the next few weeks (>3.7ctw) and was convinced that I would also wear them day and night... but based on the responses and the fact that they’ll inevitably be bulkier/taller, I’m seriously second guessing myself now...

I used to sleep in my 0.88ctw in my younger days (20s) but no longer after my 30s to prevent piercing holes from enlarging due to stretching or weight of earrings. Once I stopped, I just couldn’t do it anymore, just find the posts pokey. I practically don’t wear any jewelry at home. Shower is a no-no too.

Consider myself lucky to have many pairs to choose from, daily. So far no damage of post or backing.

I have three earrings per ear, diamond studs .605 tcw, small ruby studs, and then smaller diamond studs. I only take them out to clean. No problems. I was not able to sleep with my larger studs that I no longer wear.

I never used to sleep in my earrings, but because of the pandemic I haven’t gone out anywhere in so long I went and put all my earrings in the bank, except for my studs which I now wear all the time. So now I tend to leave them in my ears even though I know it’s not great. Once I bring my earrings back from the bank I’ll take my studs off every night because I won’t be putting them on everyday.

I take all my jewellery off except the Fitbit Charge 2 before I go to bed.

DK :))

Been wearing earings since baby, been wearing studs for more than a decade (considering my age its quite long time), never been without earing/stud for whole of my life, wake up/sleeping/swimming, etc. Maybe because there’s always something in my ear since I don’t even have memory, so it doesn’t bother me, even on those time I wore a big drops earings, etc. My piercing hole still stays the same, never change, I wore a smaller studs on my 20s because bigger studs looks old on me, now I’m wearing 1.35ctw, 24hrs a day, 365days a year.

PS. For those who ask, what kind of parents pierced their babies???? Its different kind of culture than the States, hospitals offered optional service which usually parents of baby girl will take, where they pierce newborn babies in hospital, main reason is to differentiate baby girl and baby boy. And usually when the piercing hole dried up they change the stud(from the piercing gun) to a tiny hoop, usually 0.25gr for babies. But that was the more modern way to do piercing, back in the day, they use needle (injection needle) to pierce babies ears *mine too

I had mine pierced at 3 - in my culture it’s normally done at 1. I remember having them pierced - I think it’s one of my earliest memories. I bawled until my mum told me to choose my new studs - tears dried up pretty quickly, I recall

I have found that saying something like “let me make sure I understand - you feel that an eight/ten/X year old is mature enough to make her own decisions regarding permanent body modification, whereas a younger child is not?” effectively shuts those who feel inclined to voice objection up. Some cultural norms are genuinely destructive and harmful; I’ve yet to meet anyone who can make any sensible argument that piercing an infant girl’s ears is one of them.

Oh - and to actually answer the question - No to any jewellery to bed except a plain band!

I only remove my jewelry to pop it in the ultrasonic cleaner.

I'm in the "Other" category. I no longer wear studs because my holes stretched out. I never wore "heavy" earrings but I did
wear my studs to bed (1 ctw) not realizing that it may be stretching my holes. I even had one hole surgically corrected but again
after 6 months had it re-pierced and after healing started wearing studs 24/7 (to bed again). Once again that hole stretched out.
I know some people sleep on their backs and may not have an issue with it. I'm a stomach sleeper so one side of my head is always
on the pillow. (I wish I knew at the time that this was possibly causing a problem :confused2:). It also caused wrinkles on your face but I cant
seem to switch to be a back sleeper unless I want to stay up all night.:(sad

I now only wear hoops, shepard hooks, or omega backs. I hate taking studs on/off. I feel like my fingers are all over them and they
do not stay clean. I do have those thin cotton gloves I could use to change them but who's got time for that???

I don’t wear any jewelry overnight. I clean everything each night and put safely away

I don’t wear any jewelry at night. The easiest thing to do is get a Lenox jewelry dish at Macy’s (was recently on sale for $7) and put on your night stand and put your rings and studs on there every night.

Otherwise, they have got to be filthy. Diamonds attract dirt and oil and even if you change your sheets and pillowcases every night, I’d hate to see the layer of dirt and oil on them if you wear them to bed. Same with rings, plus you are risking prong damage.

My studs are 1.4 ctw. But I didn’t wear my .88 ctw at night either.

99% of the time, everything comes off before bed aside from a plain 2mm wedding band.

My diamond studs are 1.84cttw in a 3 prong setting that has a cupped back instead of the traditional martini - so on those rare nights when I don't remove them, they tend to not be too uncomfortable - the earring post is what will stab me if my head hits the pillow wrong. I've worn these since September of this year, prior to that I had 6.5mm moissanite studs in 6 prong martini settings for 4-5 years (definitely uncomfortable to sleep in) and before that 5.5 mm moissanite stones in a 3 prong martini setting - also uncomfortable (also roughly 5 years wear time).

Since I prefer the 3 prong look, I very much worry that if I tried to sleep in them regularly that I'd loosen the prongs over time and therefore lose a stone. They still get checked for security about once a week when I do their weekend cleaning.

I wore my 2.3ctw studs to bed for 4 years. Took them off only to clean. Then I stopped because I stopped wearing studs. Now I wear my VCA sweet Alhambra pave studs to bed. I usually also wear my ering and my solitaire diamond pendant. That’s just what I do. I have never damaged or lost anything sleeping. When I used to wear a watch regularly I kept my Rolex on while I slept too.

I’m a work in process trying not to sleep in my studs! The main components are Victorian and they are quite large in size (approx 3.5 total carat weight of OEC and OMC). I have however gone for months at a time, only taking them off to clean them when I wash my hair and put them straight back in again. The Victorian components which make up my every day cluster studs have posts which are screw back. The trader who sold the earrings to me thought they may have been added in the 50’s. The threads are very worn so comfortable in the ear. They are however difficult to remove, which has added to my laziness.

No, no, no, no, no! I have solid gold clicker earrings and gold flat back piercing earrings that stay in, anything with diamonds or stones comes out.

Small studs no problem. I am not sleeping on pearls though :)

No fine jewelry worn to bed or in the shower. I take everything off before bed. I take off rings before doing any cooking, loading the dishwasher, etc. I like my jewelry to stay in nice condition. It might take me all of 30 seconds to put my studs on, so it's no big deal for me to take them or any other earrings off daily.

My main pair of studs is 1.87ctw and I never sleep in them. They are too bulky and uncomfortable for that (oh and I have tiny earlobes, so that probably play a role as well). In fact, when I wear my 0.3ctw pair I do forget them every now and then and end up sleeping with them

I never sleep, shower or swim in jewelry.

Its bad for your ear holes to sleep in studs. Its very easy and quick to pop them off at night and back on in the morning. It feels right for me to do that, l think my jewelry needs to rest too. Plus I may wear a different set of earrings the next day.

If you shower or swim in your studs and a diamond comes out, you'll never find it again. Also, the chlorine will eat away at your setting and leave it pock-marked and fragile over time.

I had 1 ctw studs for 20 years with screw backs and loved them.

Then I bought 2 ctw studs with Guardian backs (similar to La Pousette, but easier to use) last February.

Now I'm in process of upgrading to 3.8-ish ctw studs. I'll stay with my martini settings with Guardian backs because they are super comfortable on me. I've never had any problem with stretching, probably because I never sleep in them.
