Does anyone think this princess cut is too shallow?

yeah, I was going by that chart, but then there are people on pricescope that say you cannot judge a princess cut by numbers, so is the photo a good enough judge or do you have to get the ASETs and other tests done? And what if you're looking for good bang for your buck rather than the most perfect diamond ever, can you trust the photos on james allen to give a good representation? Thanks!

Does not look promising from the image. You can ask for up to 3 ASET from JA.

Are there any give aways in the photo that could help me see imperfections in the stone, such as dark spots or things like that... compared to so many of the photos (with my untrained eye) this one looked to be better than a lot on jamesallen... or are there no shortcuts other than lots of experience looking at diamonds?

No short cuts, sorry. The lighting of JA's setup is not really consistent so difficult to judge light return, what I usually do is to see the brightest facet and then see how well it is distributed under the table and near the girdle of the stone. The stone you picked, while it is bright under the table, becomes dark at the edge of the table and not much brightness outside the crown facets. Could be cause by the cutting or lighting.

so, I shouldn't put too much weight on the jamesallen photos then? If you were looking to purchase a princess cut online, would you basically go by the pricescope charts to eliminate noncontenders and then request ASET images to go from there?

You have to go by the image as for the chart you do not have enough information for it, no crown height. Also a little restrictive as some AGS0 cut graded stones can have total depth greater than 75%.

as far as playing the percentages, would you say stick with princess cuts on the deeper rather than shallower range?

nope, both can work or both can fail depending on the facet angles.

so I guess the only real way to get a nice princess cut is to work with a trusted dealer... even if it is online?

Thank you for all of the advice! I think I will leave the diamond selection to the pros, even if I do pay a bit more.

Sorry, cannot help much as nothing caught my eye when I search on JA.

no problem, I think I'll find a pricescope vendor and give them my parameters to work within as far as size and budget, etc.
Thank you so much, you've been extremely helpful!

Good luck. :)

Is the table on this diamond okay or will it look too shallow... also, would you go off of the real diamond photos on jamesallen.com for choosing what looks good in a fancy cut... thanks for opinions!

1) no it doesn't look too shallow, based on table size if I had to guess it has a decent enough crown height
2) It does look promising to me based on the numbers and general inconclusive impressions of the photograph
3) Get an ASET to confirm though
4) If you are expecting an AGS ideal or branded cut light performance you won't find them on JamesAllen and not in that price range. Those should be ~20 - 50% more based on a lower yield from the rough and other brand premiums. But if you want an average to very good cut princess at a competitive price than I think the candidate you chose may be a good guess.

Thanks for the advice... I'll think of jamesallen.com as a good middle of the road option if I choose to go that direction... very helpful!
