So I''m hoping to lose quite a bit more weight before the wedding next May (at least 25 pounds). But there is a fantastic tent sale going on at a bridal store next weekend. How easy is it for alterations folks to take in a dress? If I buy something in a 12 now, for example, and end up a 6 at my first fitting, will it be impossible to bring the dress in? Have any of you bought a dress then lost a bunch of weight? How did the alterations go?

6 sizes would be a lot to take in. Not to mention expensive!! If you have until next May, I''d wait unless you find something you absolutely can''t live without, ya know?

I''m a size 10 and my bridal shop made me order a size 18 because I have a large chest (although I really think they were just trying to make extra money by making me pay for a plus-size). At any rate, when the dress came in it was so big that it literally fell off my body and pooled at my feet. I''m not sure if I had to pay extra for the alterations, but they had not problem making it fit like a glove in time for my wedding. My dress was fairly plain, though, so keep that in mind. Something with beading or lots of lace is going to be harder to alter down by many sizes.

hi nuggetbrain, i would wait as well if your wedding isn''t until may and you plan on losing a lot of weight, my sister purchased a sample gown for her wedding that was far too big for her, the alterations were difficult because of the style she chose, in the end she paid almost as much for the alterations as she did for the dress in the first place

i say if you wait a little, you might be able to get a dress closer to the size you want to be, and not be limited in style by the type of alterations that need to be made

happy dress hunting! it was a lot of work for me, but definitely very fun!

sorry but i just have to say - they made you order a size 18??? from 10 to 18? even if you are well-endowed, that is overkill! did you have to pay a lot for the alterations?

Alterations were $350, which I thought was pretty reasonable considering it was a Beverly Hills boutique. The dress was from a very well respected, high-end boutique, so I trusted them. I was really depressed about having to order the larger size, as I was certain a 14 would have been large enough, but because I''m tall and large chested they were really insistent. And when it came in it was HUGE. Not just too big, but enormous. But it really worked out fine! Here''s a picture of the back of my dress...
