Recently I stumbled upon a .98 carat duchess cut diamond in a wedding set for 2500. I have never heard of these before and considered buying it to make into a pendant. However, I can’t find any information on them even after searching for many hours. Does anyone know anything about these diamonds price wise? I know alittle bit about their history but other than that I’m lost. Are they a good purchase?

Have you looked through this thread?

Yes, thank you for sending it to me though. I was hoping maybe for something more along the lines if pricing or if it seems like a good deal. I know it's hard to say but I am really not sure if it is a good purchase.

They would probably be priced like any other fancy-cut stone. I'm not sure why they would be any different.

.98 and $2500 isn't enough info to tell you anything about the price. Is it GIA graded? What color/clarity?

James Allen has a 1.01 K/SI2 marquise for $1560. They also have a 1.01 D/IF marquise for $8150.

Without more info i feel like it's impossible to answer. I mean, something is worth what you're willing to pay for it, but I personally wouldnt buy that particular diamond without some kind of certification.

Thank you so much for all of your responses. I'm definitely going to wait and see if I can ask her about all of this. It is beautiful but I don't want to go in blind.

To be sure and not have to guess, you should take it to a reputable place. Sometimes things that seem fake are real. Not sure if just guessing.

Honestly, I can’t remember the price point of these guys. I do still have mine. FWIW they face up fairly large and are a somewhat harder to find fancy cut. Not for everyone, but I like the angular shape of them. Alex park and Dolly used to list them now and then, though I haven’t seen any recently that I can remember. Mine both came from JBEG. Might be worth checking out old IG posts to see how they were priced? Hard to know how it would compare without colour and clarity. I also bought an empress cut pair from @elizat a few years ago.

I think buy it if you like the shape and style… I don’t think diamonds are ever a ‘good purchase’ for the sake of investment or rarity with a few exceptions. They’re ‘good purchases’ for making you happy though!

Although it is really beautiful, it seems the price is too high for me.

I care a lot about good light performance in a diamond.

IIRC, diamond cut styles that "face up fairly large" for their carat weight may let more light escape out the back and sides instead of reflecting it back out the top to your eyes.

@Karl_K is this a fair generalization?

That is possible at the extremes, also common is a lot of darkness due to obstruction.
Some have both, zones of leakage and zones of obstruction caused darkness. This is probably the most common.
Some shallow spready designs/combos can work very well.

Thanks Karl. :wavey:

Interesting that someone is cutting them in mmd.
From the pics they would fall into the both category.
obstruction in the center and leaky mush on the rest.
Individual stones vary.
