Dumb question: Trying on loose stones

This is probably the dumbest question, but I’m stumped. What’s the best way to “try on” loose stones as earrings? Is there any equivalent to the tension diamond holder ring thing? I bought some cheap settings on Amazon, but I cannot for the life of me “set” the stone and I’m afraid of harming it.

Those things are hard to use. I put the stone upside down on carpet and then try to pick it up w the stone holder. Then I DONT MOVE FROM THE CARPET in case the stone falls out

I use clear tape and tape them on my ears haha. But also being careful to be somewhere that if they fall not to lose them.

The only dumb questions are the ones that never get asked.
Maybe some DIY temp studs?

I bought those too but could only find 6mm and have 7mm and 7.7mm stones so they didn’t work

What about using one of those settings with some Blue Tack/Fun Tack to stick the diamond to the setting, just bend the prongs out far enough to not risk scratching the stone, but still hold the Fun Tack in?

Fun Tack

I hold them up to my ear with locking gem tweezers. Still need to be careful though and work over a soft area.

I’m a 3D print fanatic when it comes to testing out jewelry!

Here are some options I explored when I was trying to come up with a plan for some emeralds my husband gifted me.

That’s what I do. But just make sure you’re picking them up and holding them up to your ear in a place where you wouldn’t lose it down a drain!
