When FI and I went to pick out tuxes for the wedding, the girl who was helping us INSISTED that we have the groom and gm''s wear ivory shirts, since my dress is ivory. I was against it, but went along with it at the time because she said that other brides have complained that their dresses looked "dingy" in photographs where the guys were wearing white shirts.

But now I''m really not liking the idea of ivory shirts. Just sounds off to me. So I want to change the shirts to white, but then I''m not sure if I should cancel the ivory vest for the groom.

The plan was to have all the groomsmen wear sage vests, the dads wear charcoal vests, and the groom wear an ivory vest. If I switch the shirts to white, will the ivory vest look strange with the white shirt? If I change the groom''s vest to white then I''m afraid the color contrast will make my dress look "dingy". The third option is to have FI wear a white shirt and a champagne vest. My dress has "champagne" beading and trim, but I''m pretty sure it''s a different shade than the vest.

I feel kind of silly deliberating over this for so long, but I''m just not sure what to do. Any opinions?
Thanks.

no help here...i have pretty much the same exact dumb tux question

eagerly awaiting answers!!!

Can this girl at the shop, or anyone else, show you photos of the "dingy" effect she''s refering to? If you have your dress maybe try taking a picture of it next to a white shirt and see how it looks as a printed photo. Sorry , I don''t have any personal experience with this.

I went to the Men''s Wearhouse site and matched it up. Won''t let me copy and save the pic but here''s the website:

I think that looks pretty good, ivory on white!

Here''s my tux dilemma:
My gown is white, my 3 BMs have black dresses. FI has only 1 groomsman. We were thinking silver/platinun for FI and dark platinum for the groomsman. I think this will look fine but should my FI have a white vest and the groomsman have a black vest? Does anyone remember cumberbunds and bow ties? ha!

I think the ivory vests w/ the white shirts will be fine... I like the white one white look, and I think ivory/white is close enought it will complement each other not clash. why don''t you go into one of the stores and see how it looks? Do they carry all the different colors there?

If you havent seen everything in person, you might want to go. It would be easier to play with combos that way i think.

We rented our tuxes from Men''s Warehouse. DH and ring bearer had ivory shirt with ivory vest. GMs had white shirts and silver/platinum vests. I was very worried that the ivory was too creamy/yellow and would make DH look dingy! My dress wasnt white, but it wasnt ivory either. Everything turned out okay though. This is the best pic i have here... in the pics, everything kinda evened out color-wise. (GM with white shirt on left).

Selflove - I think its yalls call on the vest color. Ive been to some weddings where the groom and GMs had the same color on, Ive been to some where the groom, the BMs and the GMs all matched, the bride was the only stand out... both are good looks. Personally, I wanted DH to have a cream vest and shirt so we kinda matched and stood out together (it was *our* day!). Our FG and RB were mini versions of us, everyone else "matched" in either black/blue (BMs) or black/silver (GMs).

HTH!

First...there is no dumb question.

Second, I think it will look fine. I don't think it will make your dress look dingy. My FI said he's wearing a black tux, ivory vest, white shirt (at least I assume) and a black tie. I couldn't picture it so I print out two different tuxes with white/white or ivory/ivory and colored the tie black.

I get a better idea but right now I'm sitting here wondering if I want him to pick out the tuxes himself.

I need to go back and look at the picture to reassure myself.

FI and I both went to separate stores to try and look at the shirts with the vests, but they don''t seem to have the actual clothing items there, just swatches. Don''t they understand that I''m an obsessive bride and I need to see the whole ensemble in person?!?

I called last night and made the switch to white shirts. So right now he''s down for a white shirt and an ivory vest, but I''m still considering the champagne vest as well. I looked around on the Knot last night, and saw some pictures of the various options and I thought the white shirt/ivory vest looked okay, so maybe we''ll just go with that.

We are getting our tuxes from Men's Wearhouse and the guy helping us informed us that it's better to wear an ivory shirt with an ivory vest. He said having a bright white shirt next to an ivory vest or dress might make the ivory look dingy and unclean. When I was shopping for a dress with my mom, she had this huge dislike for the ivory dresses. She's a clean-freak and she wanted the brightest, whitest dress she could find. She just kept saying the the ivory dresses looked dirty to her and she has the urge to take them to the cleaners. LOL. I know it's all personal preference, but the point I'm trying to make is: Ivory will probably look good only with ivory and not bright white. I didn't look myself, but I tend to agree. Now champagne, because it has that goldish look to it, might be a better option.

Ok. I used to be a manager of a tplace in Houston that is pretty big ( Al''s Formalwear) I will tell you the LD on this.

Reason she was telling you about the Ivory shirt and the dress is because if you have the Groom in White against your dress- it will look dingy or slighty dirty. You may not be able to tell with the shirts from a far but if you are up close you will be able to tell. A lot of times you would think that Ivory is really dark and not close to white, most places have the Ivory as a soft candlelight that will blend in really well. :) I had an ivory dress and I had all the guys in Ivory shirts and Blake was in an Ivory vest as well as 4 hand tie ( long tie) you will not see the difference if you have the shrits ivory but if you are like me and a lot of other brides comparing a white shirt to an ivory dress might drive you slightly crazy. :) Trust me on your big day you will not want to think about anything but how great you feel in your dress and that you are marrying your honey!! :)

Let me know if this helps!

I don't know if you can really tell the ivory and white shirt apart in pictures and I don't remember thinking it looking really dark in person either. DH had ivory shirt with ivory vest and GMs had ivory shirt with champange vest from Men's Wearhouse. Both look very nice. I am also different than most because I prefer ivory over stark white because stark white is just too bright for me.

Here's a pic of DH and GMs so you can see the combo. I cut off most of the picture, so the shirt and vest can be bigger.

I used to work at a tplace in college and we were taught the same thing that Stradwermangrl is saying. The ivory shirts that most places carry are more like a winter white or off white color and not a true ivory color (or at least what I think a true ivory color should look like.) Most brides gowns aren''t white white anyway so I think an ivory shirt (or whatever color your place calls it) with the ivory vest will look best.
