Hi all,

For context: my wife has a 1.6 ct round ACA solitaire engagement ring and I recently gifted her 2 ctw studs (also ACA rounds) for being incredible in some very difficult times. Thanks to Brittany at Whiteflash for helping with both of those!

My next target... I think... is a solitaire pendant. I keep these ideas a secret from my wife so I’m hoping the eternally positive and knowledgeable community here can help answer a few of my questions.

Based on the ct weights above, what would be a normal size/weight for a pendant to look proportionally correct?

Also, I appreciate some feel comfortable going down in color or clarity on favor of size for earrings (as opposed to rings). How does a pendant compare? I’d imagine one should seek similar color/clarity to the earnings for a pendant?

Thirdly, I like to keep things classic. She has 3 prong martini earrings and a six prong e-ring. What is the most classic setting for a pendant? It is normal to wear one every day?

Thank you everyone!

I think .50 to match earring size or .75 carat a nice size, especially if worn on a shorter chain.
Are you thinking a “pendant” or set fixed into the chain.
If set into the chain, a larger size helps it sit and stay centered. Some people love this look, others prefer a pendant that comes off the chain / can move on the chain.

Ditto @Bron357- I wear a .6ct heart set in a bezel and fixed on an adjustable chain and think it’s just the right amount of sparkle and substance (for me) for easy every day wear. If your wife enjoys being a little more blinged out I think .9 could be really nice!

For quality of stones it really depends on yours and her preferences and what y’all value. That said usually people don’t seem to mind going down a little in clarity (still mostly eye clean) since people aren’t all up close to the neck or ears to be seeing any inclusions if the cut/color/performance are where you like — so similar to her stud earrings sounds nice if she will wear them all together!

I'd go for 1ct each to match her studs, or below. My personal preference is for smaller solitaires on the neck. Maybe a .50-.70 in a delicate bezel? Still classic and perfect for every day, but not too matchy.

You're a very thoughtful fella!!

I think 2/3rd the size of the ering is a nice, safe pendant size. So around 1ct would be good I think - balanced with both the earrings and the ring. I think a pendant that comes off the chain is best for flexibility (if she ever wants to wear a different pendant on the same chain) and a chain with many jump rings is good (so she can adjust the length she wants to wear it at). I personally like solitaire pendants worn right at the hollow of the throat, but I also like the ability to wear them a couple inches lower for flexibility/layering purposes.

As for setting style, a 4 or 6 prong basket setting would be best. I prefer pendants without a bale, with the chain going through the basket in the back. Prong setting because all her other jewelry has prongs, and basket setting because martini can be uncomfortable/twisty around the neck.

I think between 0.75 - 1ct is a good size :)
I would probably prefer less than 1ct though for a pendant so closer to 0.75ct.

I don't think there is a wrong answer. It really depends on preference. For daily wear, I personally prefer no more than 1ct for a solitaire pendant. My 6-prong solitaire e-ring is 2.73ct (9.03mm G VS2), my 3-prong martini studs are approx. 2ctw (6.25mm each, G & H SI1), and my new daily wear bezel set pendant with a .85ct (6.15mm I VS1) is being delivered today from David Klass. I went with bezel because I don't mind my pendant not being "matchy-matchy" and for daily wear, I didn't want prongs that might catch, etc.. Color is more evident in larger sizes, so at under a carat H-I is plenty white to me. But a lot of people prefer more bling for daily wear and some recommend the pendant size to be between the size of the e-ring and the studs, so maybe 1.1-1.25ct in your case. I'd gauge her preference for size by her other necklaces. If they are dainty and more discreet, consider something in the .75-1ct range, if they are larger, chunky or on the flashy side, go with 1.1-1.25ct. GL!

I think 1 carat at minimum. How big a person is she? If she is petite she may be able to go slightly smaller. If she is a bigger
person then maybe up to 1.25. I always think the pendant should be bigger than a single earring (you have 2 ctw earrings).

I also think that it depends on how high she plans on wearing it. If she plans something closer to her throat then a smaller ctw
(.8ish?) vs if she wants it to hang down lower than 1 carat-ish.

FYI - my e-rings are about 1.1 carat (I have 2 different rings I wear) and I wear a 6.3mm round pendant. It is on a 17 inch chain.
Its a 1.08 carat Old European cut so it faces up smaller for its weight. I am also 5'7''.

EDIT...I dont wear studs so have no comparison for you there. I'm more of a hoop girl.

I think you could do either a bezel set pendant or prong/basket. I don't think it matters that a bezel is different from the e-ring or studs. A bezel will make the pendant stone look larger than if it is prong/basket set. I do prefer for my pendants to be the slide type and not the fixed type. I have both and find that my fixed pendant needs adjusting a lot more while wearing it than the ones that slide along the chain. And as someone above noted, with a slide you can change your chain to a different metal color or length (if you don't get a chain with adjustable lengths). As for size, I'd say depending on the setting and length of chain, somewhere between .80 and 1 ct should be good for daily wear. And as someone noted, if she is petite a stone will look larger on her than on someone taller and/or larger.

I think the norm is to have e-ring the largest, the studs the smallest, and the pendant size in the middle. I think it wouldn't look right to have the pendant stone smaller than one stud.

Ering: 1.6 cts (7.5mm)

Pendant: 1.25-1.4 cts (7-7.2mm)

Studs: 1 ct per ear (6.4mm)

Ditto what @diamondseeker2006 said. I'd personally select a diamond pendant in between the ring and earring size, which means it would be in the 1.2 - 1.4 ct range.

I am medium height, but have a little frame, (US dress size 00). I find on me, that anything below .9 ct for a pendant just seems too small and visually disappears. But everyone is different in how they perceive what is appropriate for daily wear. And different parts of the country (and world) have very different notions of what "average" diamond size means.

The good news is that you are buying from a vendor where you and your wife can upgrade down the road should you chose to do so. That takes a lot of pressure off! (Smart husband!)

Regarding color, I'd buy a diamond pendant in between the color grades of your ring and earrings. If your ring and earrings are several grades different in color, I'd personally want a transition between them.
