Earring jackets question - can a halo stud be inserted in an earring jacket?

Have been tossing up the idea of getting myself a more decorative/blingy pair of earrings for formal occasions when I hit upon the idea of getting a jacket (not a drop jacket, but one that goes around the stud) made for my stud earrings (they are 3ctw and currently set in a permanent, non removable halo) instead. I figured that is probably more cost effective. Still figuring out exactly what I want the jacket to look like, but I wanted to know if this is actually possible first. Has anyone done this / seen this done / know why it can't be done?

The resultant look would be a double halo surrounding the centre stone, however, I suspect it can only be achieved via the custom route in order to get it right.

I haven’t fully decided what the jacket would look like, the simplest of course would be a single halo jacket that matches the halo I already have on my earring (which will give it a double halo effect when worn) but I might do something a bit more “complex”. Attached a sample photo here of a pendant picture I saved off of the internet some time ago but no idea who to attribute to.



This is an oval sapphire pendant and my stud is a round diamond so it won’t look the same or anything, but I could do a jacket that looks like this (collection of pears and rounds, bigger than melee size) instead of another round of melees. It’ll just make for a blingier formal earring imo.

I already figured I would need to go custom and I’m totally fine with that. Just wanted to ask if anyone has done this and has any advice for me, or am I overcomplicating this in my head and it’s not that complicated, ie a competent jeweler can do this?

I think it’s is achievable with a good bench. My mom has a beautiful pair of jackets that she can pair with her studs or mabe pearls. They are really versatile.

My jeweler is really talented, so I think he should be able to deliver! I keep going back and forth on what I want though… a part of me is like I should stick to a fancy diamond halo (like the pic I posted), another part of me has died at the “unusual target rings” thread and is now lusting after calibre cut emeralds, and yet another part of me wants do something unusual with carved gold (like this pic that was once posted by dhimer).





Another part of me is like just upgrade your studs and go bigger but I was pretty hell bent on never doing that…. But then again they have some memories attached to them that I don’t want to keep as “top of mind” I suppose.

Lots to think about. But I’m glad that it seems it is at least a feasible plan
