OK......so now we Floridian's who smuggly say we only have to deal with Hurricanes but don't have to contend with the uncertainty of the ground moving around, can't even make that claim. Yesterday morning, about 225 miles from Tampa, in the Gulf of Mexico, an earthquake occured, which was a 6.2 in magnitude on the Richter scale. This would have been quite major had it occured on land, but evidently, in the middle of the gulf, was pretty minimal. It didn't even create a wave. But, many people did report their homes shaking and feeling the ground move. We live in a brand new highrise tower and at the time of the quake, we felt absolutely nothing and we were sitting on our front terrace having coffee and reading the paper. Our building was built to pretty high tolerances and should be able to withstand winds of 150 miles/hour, but I guess it was also designed to handle the ground shaking a bit as well.

Anway, must remember that we can no longer feel such smugness about the ground moving underneath our feet again.........So, we get tornadoes, hurricanes, major humidity, huge amounts or rain, bugs the size of apples, alligators roaming freely, no-seeums (evil little biting bugs), love bugs (bugs who serve no purpose other than to mate and lay eggs and who fly in swarms and strip the paint off your car if not removed quickly), flying-light-attracted cockroaches. We're the lightning capitol of the northern hemisphere, and NOW we have earthquakes......but we love our sinking, rattling, swamp of a state!!!!

Gee Rod, guess I won''t complain about living in the midwest anymore.

I guess there really is no completely safe place on the planet. And Florida can be a pretty terrific place to live (like November through May is beyond spectacular). However, with all the things we have to deal with, if frogs ever start falling from the sky, this guy''s outta here!!!

NO offense to any Montanians. I''ve been through there, it''s a lovely state.

Doesn''t the New Madrid fault run into the gulf, by way of the Missippi?

I don''t want to talk about it.
