So who got awakened by a shaking bed this morning, besides me??

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/18/illinois.earthquake/index.html

A magnitude-5.2 earthquake, centered 131 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, shook southern Illinois early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Oh, I didn''t think to look in there for a thread Love!

Crazy wasn''t it? As I was waking up, I thought my hubby was shaking the bed, and I was like, WHY is he doing that?? lol

Ellen, are you in Illinois?

It is kinda scary but still funny at the same time. Never expected an earthquake that 'quakey' in the midwest. That is funny about thinking your hubby was shaking the bed, there were a whole bunch of people interviewed on our local news who thought their SOs were trying to play tricks on them!

We live about 90 miles from the epicenter and it was really mild. My dog woke me up about a minute or more beforehand (around 4:30am) and I was like What is wrong with you? Jeez. Lay down. And then the house started shaking and I could hear everything that was hanging on the walls swaying. I live in an old house so I definitely felt it. People this morning at work weren''t sure at the time what it was. Mostly, we think of winds and tornados here, so that was most people''s first fear. I bet it lasted less than 20 seconds. At the time my heart is beating rapidly but I still think it''s fun in an interesting kind of way. I couldn''t fall back asleep though because I was worried about all those shows on the Madrid fault being ''the big one'' so I just couldn''t relax after that.

Yes, I''m in IL on the IL/MO border. That''s is funny that other people thought something like that too.

Actually, the midwest has a fault capable of producing some big ones, The New Madrid. I can''t get the main site to come up, but this link gives some info.

I know. Instead of getting in a doorway, I just sat there going "Isn''t this awesome"??

Uh, I slept through it!

Incidentally, what irked me this morning was listening to the radio on Fox News and "Chicago shaken by a 5.3 earthquake this morning......"
Ah yes, all hail the great state of Chicago!!!
I swear. Three people could have been serously injured in Southern IL and the earthquake would have still shaken CHICAGO.

Apparently people felt it as far up as here in Madison. But we slept through it and so did our dogs!

people here (KY) said they felt it...I was asleep!

So did my middle one.

Starset, I know. Nothing important exists in IL besides Chicago.

(absolutely no offense meant to my northern friends)

Oh my goodness! As, um, "interesting" as that sounds I am glad you are all ok!! I''ve never experienced anything like that before, but it would be safe to say that if I ever did I would be freaking out!

...

Although, if I were to be woken up by a shaking bed I would also immediately think it was hubby as well, lol!

It was odd -- I thought we were in the middle of a bad windstorm at first...then the beams started creaking and the bed shaking. Good times.

I haven''t been checking -- was there anyone hurt? Was there much damage?

I didn''t feel a thing here... thank goodness! You all can keep your earthquakes and take our hurricanes too

We slept right through it, but I read the headline this morning - apparently a bunch of people felt it here (Eastern IA). My parents are in Champaign and I''m going to try to see if I can catch my dad before he goes to work to hear if the house rattled. It''s so bizarre!

My husband''s response this morning - "But we live in the midwest!!" I said "Right...were you not paying ANY attention in science class when they talked about earthquakes?" I''ve always heard of faults through IN and S. IL but never actually experienced the earth move. I was bummed out, actually!

HI:

I slept thru it also!

So far I haven''t heard of anyone getting hurt, nor any big damage. St. Louis did report some crumbling of a bridge. I imagine it will take all day for news to trickle in on any damage.

I remember the 4.1 back in 1984 - I was nine.

It woke us up at 5:37 and I''m in Cincinnati, OH - something like 250 miles away... I knew exactly what it was, I had flashbacks one in the ''80s ....

Wow, it could have been a lot worse. I''m glad it was not a lot worse...

I just called my SIL in Middletown OH, (inbetween Dayton and Cincinnati), and she felt it, she just didn''t know what it was til I called. She said she woke up and thought the cat was on the bed scratching, but when she felt for her she wasn''t there. She hadn''t seen the news, so she had no idea.

Me too. They''ve been saying we''re due for a bad one for years now. Hope it''s not in mine or my kids lifetime....

Erg, that bugs me so much. Whenever I tell people I grew up in Illinois, they just say "Chicago?"

Yes. Chicago. Actually, a little suburb of Chicago, about 2.5 hours south

Sounds frustrating but as someone with a horrible sense of direction, at least these people have some concept of your geographic location. I live in Indiana and it seems like nobody knows where that is! Even my family asks, "So how is Kansas?" or, "Do you like living in Idaho?" Might as well be!

omg Too funny!

Anyone else feel the ''aftershock'' about 10 minutes ago?

I'm so glad you posted this Ellen because I was beginning to think I am crazy! (We'll, OK, maybe that's a broader topic... ) They are building a grocery store a few blocks from me and when they were pounding the pilons (sp?) into the ground it felt a lot like this so when I first woke up that's what I thought it was, but then I thought, why on earth would they be doing construciton at this hour?

Didn't feel the aftershock though...
