my god, it's happening! Yesterday, he said he wanted to go "ring shopping" but it's Saturday so a lot of vendors are closed. I thought a lot more PS vendors had offices in NY we can drop by :(.

I know I'm being a brat, but I kinda feel like all the romance is nil in this process. He says this isn't true, but I was half-joking that it felt like this thing was just one item on a list of tasks to do before popping out kids, as if that's his ultimate goal and he needs to get started. Know what I mean? He is 6 years older than I am so his timeline is a bit shorter than mine. But it really seems like he wants to get the ball rolling.

Since the Diamond Dist is mostly closed and full of crooks anyway, we went to DeBeers. Wow. I tried on a K VS1 stone that was 4.5 cts. IT WAS ENORMOUS! We went in there looking for stones ~3cts, but the saleslady picked that one out, haha. Actually (and I'm REALLY glad for this), the 3ct rocks looked huge on my fingers! I wonder if I'll actually be scared to wear it out since it's so big and "HELLO I AM A BIG ROCK ON SOMEONE'S FINGER, WATCH ME BLIND YOU WITH LIGHT!" I have to say, even 2.5cts looked good, so maybe I can step down in size! Haaa, I'll probably end up getting ~3ct anyway.

Went into Tiffany's, which was a bit of a sh*tshow since we were waiting nearly 20 min before anyone decided they can help us. GET MORE SALES STAFF, YOU'RE SELLING 5- AND 6-FIGURE ROCKS HERE!?"""""""""""""""""""" (haha that was my cat walkign across my keyboard).

Anyway, I can't stand these store lights. The stones are shooting so many rainbows that I keep thinking they're CZs or something. And it makes it impossible to look at color.

That's my story! No one else knows we've been ring shopping.

I guess now all that's left to do is pick out a couple of stones to look at from the PS search here and call up one of the vendors' NY offices to go have a look. Eeeeeek, I can't believe I'm at this point in my life, it's so weird!

Congrats!!! This is so exciting! Feel free to take us all in spirit on your journey!

It's not unromantic, think of all the time you and your future fiance get to spend together looking at sparkly things, there is nothing more beautiful and romantic than that ;))

So you have a good idea about what you're looking for in the rock, what about the setting?

I don't think it's unromantic either. In fact, I find it incredibly romantic that your guy is so concerned about making sure you get exactly what you want, that he wants your help in picking it! ;))

I tried to go to a few places myself to check out my color sensitivity and found it incredibly difficult. I couldn't tell whether I was insensitive to color or whether the spot lighting was tricking me. Many jewelers will accompany you outside to look at the diamond in different lighting. I have requested it myself before, and seen many others do so as well. So, next time you may want to ask them if they would allow that. Also, did they place loose diamonds in a tray for you to compare color with? When I went, I asked them if I could compare color in diamonds because I didn't know my sensitivity. So they brought out three stones, a D, a G, and an I all about the same size and placed them on their sides in a white tray. That way I was viewing color most critically.

And I know how you feel about thinking some diamonds look too big. When I tried on rings, I went in wanting at least a 1 carat, but left feeling like a 0.70 still looked huge on my hand. The more I think about it though, the more I realize that this thing will be on my finger for a long time and I'm sure I can get used to the larger size

Exciting! I agree with 4Ever - I say, just enjoy the ride! I'm totally jealous that you can go see some of the PS vendors in person!! I'll have to make do with online photos and videos.

We've gone on 2 separate ring shopping trips (and countless hours looking at things online together) and I actually think that it is super romantic -- it shows that he cares enough to drive all over the area to look at things in person and to do a bunch of research online staring at sparkly jewelry which I know he so wouldn't normally do. Plus, it is super cute to watch him pick out settings in the store that he thinks I will like and to be excited to see me try them on -- and now he is getting really good at picking out things I like!

Thanks guys! You guys are right - I think I'm just a little scared of taking such a big step that I'm getting paranoid and throwing whatever I can at it. It's like I just won't let myself be happily excited! Thanks for the perspective. I just need to breathe and enjoy it, not try to push it away.

Haha exactly! I feel like the 3cts were too big (I really thought they would look a lot smaller) on my finger, but I think that if I went with a smaller stone, I might kick myself in the future for not going with the "full" size. I'm not planning on upgrading in the future, so this is it.

Oh you girls. I've had my setting picked out for over a year. HAHA crazy huh. I realllllly liked the MWM Petite Torchiere with some modifications but I'm thinking that's just going to be way too expensive. I always loved the Vatche Swan and most likely will be getting that one.

I emailed all my diamonds of interest to ID Jewelry and he's supposed to get back to me so that we can go see some tomorrow! No response yet though, I wonder if he can call up the stones I listed since they weren't on the ID Jewelry website.

Sighhh I haven't even told anyone, you guys are the only ones who know about this.

haha Too cute, my younger cat does that all the time!! :D

Congrats on starting your journey towards engagement. The ring shopping process is really fun, and definitely go for the bigger rock! Might as well since you have that option open for you!! :naughty:

Keep us updated. I love to hear about all the steps leading up to the big day (proposal)!!!

I LOVE the MWM Petite Torchiere and the Vatche Swan! The MWM is my dream ring! Since, like you said, it is so expensive, we plan on just getting a simple solitaire and putting almost all the budget toward the stone since we don't want to upgrade either. So hopefully a reset into the MWM is in my future.

Vatche is expensive, so I don't think the MM ring would be a huge amount more. I think a wedding band would sit better next to the MM ring, also. I would encourage you to get the setting you really want if you are getting a 3 ct. stone!!!

I can't wait to see what you get when the time finally does come! Mark makes BEAUTIFUL settings! I would go with him over the Vache just simply bc it's Mark and it's made JUST for you! The swan is a beautiful setting though but I agree with the other poster who said if it's not that much more (cuz Vache isn't cheap) I'd go with Mark. Might take longer to get it made though...but OH so worth the wait! <3!

EEEEEEEEEEEEEK again!!! I THINK I FOUND THE ONE!!!

we went diamond shopping by appt yesterday since we had the day off for MLK day. We had called in a bunch of diamonds that I had run by PS on RockyTalky. Turns out we can both see color in a G ( :(( ) and these SI1 inclusions bothered me. Sooo, we checked out this F VS2 that was the most expensive stone I was considering, and it was PERFECT. CUT PERFECTLY. "Super ideal" proportions according to the vendor.

Let me tell you, after seeing just two candidates right before, I knew this was the one. I didn't need to see anything else. AND they had the Vatche Swan in stock so I tried that on. DROOOOOOL.

For this size diamond, MWM would run about $3.5k to $4k, which the Swan is $1.5k. I don't know if I like the Torchiere $2k+ more :praise:

you could see color in a G face-up or from the side? if you could see it face-up i do not envy your sensitive eye! i can go down to I/J no problem on face-up rounds.

Nope, not face up (especially in that lighting, even though there was a "natural light" lamp), but from the side against white paper. I thought a G would be basically colorless, but it was quite apparent to me. Even the F I could tell wasn't clear, but hey, good enough for me!

We tried on a 4.5ct K color at DeBeers and you could instantly see the warmth in that, even with the crazy sparkle lighting.

sounds amazing!
