Aren''t there people who feel it gives them some sort of something (what I do not know!) to eat the after birth? Personally I would prefer a cheeseburger, but all kidding aside, the fact that even if he is joking we think he is not shows how far he has come!!!!

I thought there was some cultural tradition to make a placenta soup? A coworker of mine got offered some placenta soup after the birth of a friend''s baby. Uh, no thanks.

I think some cultures bury it or something, it is some tradition, but God, he is just a total freak. I think she has been brainwashed and is a zombie or a Stepford wife, which I am sure he likes...he picks them young and naive. I heard he was trying to audtion young actresses for this "role" and she was the only one who showed up!

Animal mothers eat the placenta as it''s a good source of iron, according to FI. I didnt bother to reserach this so forgive me if it''s wrong.

yuck

I read somewhere that he was interested in Lindsay Lohan, and Haley Duff?? But the ICK factor was too great for either of them.

What in the hell is going with him? Has he always been this crazy or did he hit his head recently?

I read somewhere that he was interested in Lindsay Lohan and Scarlett Johanson, but that neither would meet him in person.

I''ve heard (forget the source) that scientologists will sometimes arrange marriages for image/political reasons. It''s probably a lot more likely with celebs, because they''re more visible. They could have been the ones to decide that he should date and marry a younger actress. Plus, Katie Holmes, Haley Duff, and Lindsay Lohan have or once had pretty wholesome images and seemed to be good role models for younger girls, so it was possible that they wanted to increase visibility with the younger generation. (Rainbowtrout, if you''re reading this and I''m incorrect about arranged marriages -- which is entirely possible, especially because I''m not sure of my source -- feel free to jump in.)

I remember seeing a doco a while back where some species of deer eat the placenta because it hides any traces of the birth - predators will be able to pick up the scent of the placenta.

To quote Alice in Wonderland.....Things are getting curiouser and curioser.

Kaleigh, I think Scarlett Johansen as well...but none of them would go for it!!

blenheim---I''m not going to say its out of the realm of possibility, esp. if they have dirt on the actor or actress in question. The only thing I''ve heard rumored is that J. Travolta may be gay but the COS said if he publicly leaves they will announce it or the like.

It doesn''t make a ton of sense to me about arraingeing the actress herself though--I mean, I would hope that the ''masterminds'' of the whole thing would have more sense than to try marrying him off to a 27 yr old for good PR.

Which is a long way of saying who knows, I''ve never heard of it but it might be possible.

I've heard that whole momma deer/moms in other cultures eating the placenta too. bech...although I guess if I was seriously iron and vitamin deprived with no supplements or what, I might eat the darn thing too.

I must say though, EW! I've only seen pics of the things but that's just can't taste good, can it??

ETA: My mom buried mine under a rosebush so I'd have a nice complexion

She says its some Scottish tradition and then tells me to stop being silly...

After giving birth to 8 puppies, my bitch ate hers and licked them clean.

Yeah, I think that a lot of animals eat it while cleaning up their newborns. Tom Cruise eating it, on the other hand, strikes me as a little more disturbing...

ewwww! OK, I can''t check this anymore bc I get this image of the Jerry McGuire character sitting down to eat with a big ol''grin....oh ew.

Is this for real or am I really gullible?

No, it is true- in some cultures "placenta" is seen as a delicacy and people eat it- very true!

As someone who sees and handles placentas on a daily basis (I am a labor and delivery nurse) I can personally vouch for its NASTINESS! Yuck!

I have heard that some cultures do make placenta soup and the mother is supposed to eat it so that the baby is healthy or something? But it''s also good for fertility or something like that, so other family members always try to get some too since it makes a lot. I have no idea what culture this was though, just read an anecdote somewhere about a new mother who made some similar looking soup to try to dupe her family into letting her eat that because the idea grossed her out.

Okay here''s an article about a restaurant serving placenta soup in China? That''s the best my 30 seconds of google research can do at the moment!

Also: googling "eating placenta soup" also brings up a website with pictures of people eating REAL BABIES. DO NOT CLICK ON THAT OH MY GOD STAY AWAY.

Yes, some people do take it home- although I have never had a patient and their family admit they are going to eat it...most of them come from cultures where it is tradition to bury it somewhere on their property- but who knows what the heck they do with it when they get home...I dont think I really want to know...

Ok all, I am right there with you thinking Tom is a nutcase, It makes me ill thinking of him, however you are all going to think I''m wacky! While I did not EAT my sons placenta, it is my freezer!!! Ok I am weird I know, he was born in December at home and we kept his placenta to bury under a tree this spring!!! Placenta is actually nutricious. I don''t think I could eat it , but I do have afriend that did, she had it put into gelcaps and she took them daily! MMMMM too weird, but most animals eat theirs.

While "most animals" eat theirs, it''s generally only the females, right? They''re the ones who need the extra nutrients for breast feeding.

Oh, Tom Cruise.

If he were not wealthy and influential in Hollywood, I think he is so ill he would be locked up or at least be getting major therapy. I think he chose someone young because it might be a way to dispel rumors of his sexual orientation and also be easier to mold, influence or otherwise control the new wife. I do not think 27 is so young, maybe it is more a factor of being naive or vulnerable to certain influences. She seems a bit like a deer in the headlights to me!

Oh dear, there''s more. (Fortunately it''s non-placenta related.)

Tom''s Pals Warp Online Parade Poll
I read somewhere earlier this year that he had fired his longtime PR, and gave the job to his sister. Apparently, the original PR team basically wouldn''t let him do a lot of talking in public, and all interviews had scripts...because he was so looney!

So, he may have been crazy all along, but they kept it under wraps!

He fired his sister and has someone new...but methinks the damage is done!
