OK, so I have to post this interview of Latinas for McCain from NPR because it almost caused me to get in an accident while driving. link Its the first sound clip, so when folks complain that NPR is too liberal, well, these women compared Senator Obama with Castro and Chavez, said that he was born in the Middle East, Muslim, brainwashed...and has abandoned Christianity. Do people not know where Indonesia or Hawaii are?

I thought of Moon and Freke while swerving to not plow into the median.
Hi Selkie!

Well since McCain could be disqualified as a non-natural citizen, why don''t we just put Bush on the ballot again so this group can support him instead. I mean, change is scary you know? It''s not always good. Let''s keep the same ol'' same ol'', it''s been doing wonders for the country.

ACK! I listened to that with DH a couple days ago, and I swear we thought one of the women was his mother (the one with the comment about the brainwashing)! If the interview was in Florida rather than the southwest, we would have been sure. She is convinced he's Muslim

. The article about more Cuban-Americans voting Dem was somewhat encouraging, though. DH's dad, after years of voting solidly Republican, is switching over this year.

How was Greece?

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ETA: Seriously, how ignorant can you get? Who convinced them that Obama was Muslim? And came from the MIDDLE EAST?! WTH?! Someone needs to send them to a world geography class. Heck, even a map would do her some good.

I don''t know where my MIL gets her (mis)information, but it''s really sad. She''s a lovely, warm lady, and has had an amazing life, including fleeing from Cuba in the 1960''s. She''s very savvy in some ways, but also strangely naive and gullible in others. For instance, she gives hundreds of dollars to these crazy televangelist/faith healer types (Benny Hinn, for instance). She also called DH in TEARS the day the most recent CA gay marriage decision came down. Values-wise, I can understand her political leanings, but I hate that this insidious propaganda campaign adds fear and racism to the mix as well.

Greece was awesome, thanks Selkie!
Yikes, difficult to have a conversation with her about politics and current events eh? Excellent that your DH feels so differently, it seems that many people adopt the political stances of their parents. My mom is still convinced that Karl Rove and Dick Cheney had Paul Wellstone''s plane shot dow;, so she is nuts, but at least she is liberal nuts. Good luck with your MIL. And on a total tangent, just saw the picture of you and your DH going to a costume party...did you know each other beforehand, or were you fated to cross paths because of your coordinated attire?

Disclaimer: If you and or someone you know also thinks that Senator Wellstone was attacked by a vast right wing conspiracy, I''m not calling you "nuts" per say...its just my mom hasn''t recovered from growing up in the former soviet bloc and sees conspiracies at the dry cleaners. Not meaning to offend anyone!

LOL, yes, we steer clear of MANY topics. Neither DH or I share our parents' political views, actually. But then, politics was never really discussed in my house growing up, so I didn't even have a clear idea of their opinions until around, oh, 1998. My mom may well still think the Clintons killed Vince Foster.

RE: our costumes--funny story. Every year, some of the west coast tall ships get together in Long Beach around New Years for sails and cannon battles. Usually, the Hawaiian Chieftain, Lady Washington, the twin brigantines, the Lynx, and whatever others happen to be around are involved. On New Years Eve it's a tradition for one of them to host a costume party at the dock. We were at the party with a group of friends because we were really active at the time sailing on the schooner Pilgrim of Newport (now Spirit of Dana Point) as volunteers. I had made that dress a few years back for a medieval theme party, and he had his from his Renn Faire days. Anyway, we'd both had crushes for a while, but never did anything about it until that party, at midnight!

You can JUST make out a halyard behind my head. I think whatever we were drinking in those pics might have something to do with how happy we look too! Just kidding-it was seriously one of the best nights of my life. Let''s see...that was 7 1/2 years ago now!

That''s a great pic of you two in that thread. I totally recognize that T station from when my best friend lived in da ''Ville!
