I'm in the market for a pillowy OMC (H-L, SI1+, 2-2.5 carats ideally, min 1.06 ratio). In a perfect world, I'd find this stone for <$20k CAD, which so far is looking like a pipe dream. I've started exploring smaller stones and came across this one:

A few observations...
  • I love the elongated look, but will it read as dark in the middle?
  • Adam from OWD has some of the nicest stones I've seen, and his facets appear to be crisper than what I'm seeing here. What are your thoughts on the cut?
  • This stone looks like it may be a bit spread, which makes me wonder if it's going to read as opaque enough on the finger.
  • Polish/symmetry seem HQ for an antique, which makes me wonder if it really is one. I've asked the vendor to confirm.
I wouldn't buy this stone sight unseen, but it's the first stone I've see below my budget that ticks a lot of boxes. What do you think?

Also, I suspect I'm going to go through a lot of stones. If you're open to sharing your opinion on others I may find down the road please let me know. Thanks for your time.

If anyone is looking for a Q-R, I think this stone is beautiful. I have really fair skin so I don't think the colour would flatter. It's also not as cushiony as I'd like it to be.

It looks like the stone was touched up before sending it to GIA. To me, this takes away some of the charm of an old cut. I'll have to pass!

Thanks for sending, @lulu_ma! The 2.04 is a bit too squat for what I want (I have short fingers so the elongated look is more flattering). Alex’s is close but at his prices I would want to go a fair bit bigger since I have space to play in the budget. Keep ‘em coming if you find anything else!

I’ve attached my dream stone from OWD. Unfortunately, it’s out of reach financially!

Re, wonk, I wouldn’t want to go too wonky - I’m not fundamentally opposed to touch ups, but it’s a fine balance. I would rather be part of that decision either way, but I can see why vendors would want to make the call to boost the GIA profile ahead of the sale.3338E52C-0537-4CE9-9FE1-7FE780D9B9F1.png

I also tried this on locally. It’s 2.36 carats and a hair over my budget. It’s starting to feel like a good option E45EFC1A-EC04-4799-85F9-38106241292F.jpeg2A30F84D-AFF7-4CBD-A514-FFCB9027D3A4.jpeg

Oh, that looks promising! What are the stats?

Hypothetically, what you want should be attainable in your budget. But the market is so dry right now! I'll keep posting rings that are marginally in range.
