Hi all,

I am typically in the diamond area, and this is my first colored stone purchase. I was on e-bay one random night, and this just caught my eye. I have no clue about colored stones whatsoever. Still waiting for it to be shipped, so will just post a picture for now. As I know nothing about emeralds, I figured it was at least pretty to look at, even if it doesn't turn out to be anything special. Anyone with emerald expertise can help me gain more info on this stone? Again, probably not much of a help since its simply a picture. Stones around the ring are sapphire. I figured I could spare the $12 dollars it cost :)

The whole ring was $12? What was it advertised as? Or is the whole ring just a costume piece? For $12 that is what I'm assuming. I would think the green stone is just plastic, paste or glass.

still for $12 I really like it.

Hi there!

Seller noted that she found the ring and took it to a jeweler who confirmed the emerald and sapphires were real and noted that its heavy gold plated over fine silver.

They could be synthetic emerald and sapphires too, which are real, but not natural.

In any case, for $12, I wouldn't worry too much about it, and you like it.

Thanks for the replies! I'll probably take it to my jeweler and see what I can find as the seller noted this was a vintage ring.

I agree with the others. At a minimum, for $12 you have something very pretty to wear and enjoy, and perhaps you have found some treasure. :)) Another indication in jewelry is oftentimes the base metal. If its gold-plated or gold filled, the stones are often fake, synthetic, or heavily treated - but you never know.

We won't be able to tell from pictures alone, but you could bring it to someone as a start. You never, know, right? The gold standard is AGL (kind of like GIA, but AGL is considered the expert in colored stones, except for colored diamonds.) For $60, you can get a GemBrief from AGL that identifies the stone and whether it has been enhanced. Getting the actual enhancements can cost more money.

I am curious as to what your jeweller makes of it. Even if it is glass, dyed, etc, it is still a pretty ring for $12.
