Need advice - I bought a columbian emerald on St. Thomas last month had a GIA gemologist look at it and he said it was a natural emerald and did not mention stone fluorecencing.

Last night I was playing with my pen uv light and my new emerald fluorescenced red.

I have read yes natural emeralds can fluor red and also read no they don't.

Which opinion is correct.

Both synthetic and natural emeralds can react to UV light.

Was it the "columbian emeralds international" store?

There were a few of those stores at the resort where I stayed in the bahamas last week, I almost posted to ask opinions of them. All I know is that the salesman told me that their stones are all appraised by Lloyds of london, but then he said they had not been certified by an actual lab of any kind.

Then the salesman tried to convince me my sapphire couldn't possibly be a sapphire because it was too sparkly. And showed me some "top rated" tourmaline that was brown.

My understanding though is that natural emerald can flouresce but it would be weak/pinkish, not strong and red.

I googled and a thread came up from here that shows a picture:

I enjoy DI for the stuff they pitch to get me in the door. Received a free umbrella on a rainy day in Ketchikan...... I think it was a fake (synthetic).......it didn't last long.

My favorite part of the conversation (both in the columbian emerald store and DI): Do you see anything you like? No. Oh well we offer INSTANT CREDIT. That's nice but I'm just looking. BUT we offer INSTANT CREDIT!!!!!

Yes........'just looking' is code for pull 'er in faster!! The original post was about emeralds and I have taken a sharp turn into humor because that is my experiences with this company. I've heard sales people say all kinds of things that are not necessarily a mistruth.......but certainly are not THE truth. And I"ve seen giddy customers believing they just scored the best gemstone in the world at a cruise port in the Carribean, Alaska, etc. You get the picture.........and now back to work.........

Send it to a lab to get tested. AGL (in NYC) is the best for emerald, but GIA (NYC and CA) is probably okay. Hopefully others will chime in about GIA's ability with emeralds.

The alternative is to find a color gemstone expert like Martin Fuller, who works in McLean VA as an independent appraiser.

GIA is okay, but didn't detect irradiation in emeralds that AGL did.
