Hi there, I am looking for an emerald cut diamond for an engagment ring. My requirements are around 1.45 ratio, 1.2ct+. Ex/Ex, no Fluorescence, best colour for budget. Budget is £8k with ring.

I have found a stone I like and was just wondering if anyone could see any red flags? From research I would say the table and depth are maybe a touch on top end/slightly over and the girdle thickness is not ideal (but might be best place to make sacrifices?) I have seen a video of the stone and like the look of it, but I am not able to see the stone in person unfortunately. The plotting of the inlusions worried me a bit, but from reading it seems I shouldn't be too concerned with VVS2? Any advice appreciated.

link the video.
the numbers are a bit meh but the video will tell more.

Have you looked at 77 Diamonds?

I will check out 77diamonds thanks! Here is a video of above stone (quality has been lost a little on upload):

video looks good but there is better out there unless you like its slightly less flashy nature.

Thanks for the reply Karl, they sent a video on hand and it looked ‘nice’ but I did worry it was maybe a little ‘glassy’ and didn’t completely sparkle, but I was thinking it could just be the light/video quality..

From the video above how do you know it is not so flashy? Just it doesn’t reflect/sparkle a lot? A quite liked they way it looked from the above video and there didn’t seem to be any strange behaviour, although it is tilted rather than flat facing (not sure that matters?)

I was about to pull the trigger on this one but the salesman started getting a little pushy which made me take a step back. I spoke to Two companies with the diamond listed and both described it as a stunning diamond (one had it in store and had inspected it) guessing you have to take a sales persons opinions with a pinch of salt

From the video you posted it seems a bit "flat" to me. I don't see much sparkle going in the corners and the north/south sides. That is something I looked for when searching online for an emerald cut diamond- that the top and bottom flash and sparkle, and the sides of the keel flash on and off evenly.

Are you looking online? The folks here can help vet options for you!

Thanks very much for the feedback, I will continue to look! Yes I am looking online (in the UK) I will have a look today and post up any I find.

My search criteria:
£8k with ring ($11k)

Emeralnd Cut ~1.2ct, ~1.45 ratio, Ex/Ex, ~VVS2

Any thoughts on if this one? The video quality seems better so maybe an unfair advantage.

Hey guys, anyone able to help a n00b out? I'm pretty keen to choose one of these two stones I think (I have looked around online and can't see anything else within budget that looks better to my untrained eye) Which would you say is the better stone? Option 2 is slightly cheaper.

Option 1: https://streamable.com/168cf6
Option 2: https://storageweweb.blob.core.windows.net/files/INVENTORYDATA/VISION360/Vision360.html?d=65126150

If anyone has any other options or places to look in the UK it would be greatly appreciated. I checked 77 diamonds but couldn't find anything better within spec imo.

Option 2 looks much better to me than option 1. More flashes and less of a glassy look. If there's a good return policy with option 2 I think it's worth seeing in person.

Have you taken a look on Blue Nile? I had good luck finding my emerald cut there and here is a good recent thread of another UK pricescoper finding an emerald cut. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/emerald-cut-upgrade-final-contender.266852/ Lots of comments and feedback to reference there.

Thanks fllama, I’m leaning towards that one as well. There would be no return option unfortunately, I’d be getting stone and ring made and delivered.

I will check that thread out and look at blue Nile, I was just a little worried about custom charges to the UK.

Blue Nile have a UK branch (actually based in Dublin but supply the UK) and include all VAT, customs etc upfront. The price you see in the basket is the price you pay. Worth having a look - I had a great experience with them.

Having looked Blue Nile these are probably my top picks:

Under the 1.2ct and over budget but this one seems to have good sparkle?

Again under the 1.2 I was hoping for:

Okay back to these two options I’ve uploaded the first VVS2/D video to Vimeo which is a little better quality:

VVS1/E: https://storageweweb.blob.core.windows.net/files/INVENTORYDATA/VISION360/Vision360.html?d=65126150

Also here is a comparison on hand. Top VVS1, bottom VVS2. I’m not seeing a massive amount of difference, maybe bottom has more darkness in areas/certain angles?

If anyone else has a chance to cast any judgment over the weekend that’s oils be great! Think I’m going to make a decision on Monday :)

I am no expert, but my 2 cents are these: I would go with one of the Blue Nile stones because of their upgrade policy and their see it before you set it policy. This gives you assurance of your choice and future flexibility. I also prefer the your Blue Nile choices. The 1.15 and 1.2 seem to me to have have more similarities than the 1.14 (the presence of the ends in relation to the middle and the amount of cut on the corners). The 1.14 has a different character.

I would add this stone in for comparison as well—its faces up quite a bit larger and is closer to the 1.45 ratio you were looking for. Perhaps if its to your liking at all one of the experts will chime in. https://www.bluenile.com/uk/diamond-details/LD16668198

Thanks for that ksluice, that does look like a nice stone and well proportioned. Should I be worried about the inclusion on VS2 and whether it is eye clean still?

I LOVE that last one @ksluice posted. The inclusion would not worry me. I have a VS2 EC with similar and can barely even find it with a loupe (and I have perfect vision).

I would strongly encourage you to buy from somewhere with a return policy. Be aware that you will pay for return shipping with BN UK (approx £50 including insurance).

Thanks Karl, appreciate it!

@MillieLou when you purchased with BN UK was it a possibility to order in 2 stones at the same time? That would probably be what I would want to do in this case, particularly if you were sending back for setting anyway.

I don't see why not - as long as you had the funds to buy both upfront and to be tied up for a couple of weeks on the return.
You might have to pay for return of both separately though, it seemed a very rigid returns system with no room for flexibility. It's £40 plus insurance of £6/1000 USD so perhaps actually closer to £100 for each diamond for the OP.

I’m a square stone person. I’m a step cut person. I THOUGHT I was an emerald cut person, but it sadly turns out I’m not (unless it’s like 8 carats lol).

just my thoughts. Not trying to talk you out of it, but to give you things to consider…

like square cuts, they face up rather small. a lot smaller than you think (but as I understand it from this board, large engagements rings aren’t necessarily a thing in the UK?)

they are super elegant but they aren’t very flashy (unless you find a unicorn)

they are very hard to keep clean and step cuts have to be kept clean, or they look grey and lifeless

so anyway, keep those things in mind as you shop for one.

maybe check out Brian Gavin diamonds as he may have some in stock and he can evaluate them for you

Another consideration-since emerald cuts do face up smaller, perhaps expand your search parameters to include F and VS2 (but obviously one with well placed inclusions).

I have a F/VS2 ec. My sister has a D/VVS2 oval. They are both visually colorless. Face up the color difference is really imperceptible.

Thanks again for the advice, I’ve had a look at Blue Nile reducing colour down to F and VS2 but still don’t think I can find a better option within budget. I’m very much an OCD type so would prefer the quality over size, but it would be great to get something bigger that still looked great to the eye

One more video of the VVS1 I am 99% sure I am going for:

I’m not sure I could ask for anything else from the vendor that would make it clearer but it looks pretty good to my untrained eye!
