Hi Everyone,

I am trying to buy an Emerald Cut Diamond in the 4.5-5.2 carat range, and have found one that I really like.

This one is only 4.56 carats, but is 11.89 x 8.43 x 5.16mm so has more surface area than many 5 carat stones, and F VVS2 and a 1.41 ratio all of which I really like. However, I am a little concerned about the 2 thin black extinction squares that appear head on. Is this an example of bad extinction which should be avoided?

Thank you very much in advance! I will set it with thin perpendicular baguettes if this is a consideration (any advice there as far as height etc. would be greatly appreciated).

If that one should be avoided, this was my second choice: but it is a bit smaller, has a notch worse color and clarity and I like the ratio a bit less, but it does look very nice. The videos are not exactly the same, but I do not see any extinction on this one.

The black lines are not extinction.
They can't be leakage, aka windowing, because that would show the color of what is behind the diamond - in this case, white.

These black areas are reflections of something dark in the environment that is "visible" to the diamond.
Imagine a little mirror in a box of white translucent cloth, with a hole cut in it for the camera to peek through.
The mirror would have to be positioned exactly parallel to the camera to reflect the black camera back into the camera lens.
Depending on the angle that the strikes a facet, the facet will function as either a mirror or a window.

I think the best way for us civilians to pick a well-cut emerald cut is to get a properly-taken ASET pic.
Unfortunately few vendors do this.

Can anyone recommend one that does, preferably already on their online listings?

Thank you. I reached out to the vendor and they said they can get an ASET pic on Monday. The same stone is also offered through one of the recommended vendors on this website, which also made me feel better.

Great news.
I'm not very good at evaluating ASET pics, but several here are ... especially @Karl_K
He's a member of the trade, and he designed the diamond in my Avatar.
Trade members are limited in what they post; they can't self promote what they profit from.

But I think PS allows trade members to answer when they are asked direct questions.

They actually only had an ideal scope, and these are the best pictures I could take. I will order an ASET scope myself and do it at home, but is there anything we can draw from this?

@Karl_K Would you mind letting me know what you think of this stone? It would be extremely helpful and appreciated.

I am so out of my league here but I do not like to see the “bow tie” effect in an emerald cut that makes the center horizontal half look black.

Firstly, this is the camera lens making the black outline. Secondly, it will be blue in ASET when seen from the same angle.
Thirdly, the black does not stay there for very long in the video, so it may be a good feature as it may provide scintillation.
Finally, for you and others - I find it strange that you would shop on a competitor site when the same diamond is listed here and you come here for support?
BTW how does the price compare?

I am not a fan of rarecarrat links, they do not work well in my locked down browser and I'm not unlocking it for that site.
So im not seeing the video but Garry hit it on the head it comes down to do they stay dark or do they quickly flash when moved.
The IS images are not good enough to be useful.

The 4.77 has a very large area that goes dark all at once which is less then optimal.

Thank you very much, everyone. I read all the overview materials and guides on the site but clearly, I have a lot to learn.

Here is the video uploaded via imgur which might be helpful. I took a lot of photos and videos myself but none are great.

@Garry H (Cut Nut) , to answer you third question, I actually first saw it at that store, and then when I was doing research, stumbled across this very helpful site. The original store already pulled it off the market so, it is actually not available anywhere else although it is still listed. The price is ~3% higher at the store I am speaking with, but it does have the advantage of me being able to see the stone in person.

3% is very reasonable for the added service

from the video...
crown height is on the low side but looks acceptable.
Im not seeing any dead zones in the stone.
The dark areas in question would likely onle be there at close range and they flash.
Overall has nice patterns face up and is flashy.
The highest conclusion from a video and a pic is it has potential.
This one has potential.

Which one was ruled out? The 4.77? Which is in the most recent video from today?
